He's up there with Her Majesty then, 11 Prime Ministers I think, and also unelected

Re: Fidel Castro resigns as Cuban President

He did well to avoid all the assasination attempts. Didn't the CIA try exploding cigars and poisenous fume shoe polish?
I find it very curious that there has never been any word on what caused him to lose so much weight and have surgery. Cancer? Ulcer? lucky for him that the Cuban medical services are so good. Apparently they are the best in the world or so I am told.

Re: Fidel Castro resigns as Cuban President

I personally don't think highly of Castro but boy did he give it to the hawks in USA. Cuba govt in the future will probably dance to the tune of US$s once Castro goes/dies. Whatever the Cuban public wants should trump all international politics.

Re: Fidel Castro resigns as Cuban President

I am the son of Cuban dissidents who fled to the US after 59', I am sickened with the honor / respect many Europeans give Castro and what he has done to the once prosperous Cuba. I lost relatives in the Bay of Pigs invasion, had uncles imprisoned for years on false charges, where they were tortured as they accounted to me first hand, after 20 years my mother was able to see the two brothers who remained only after many years of attempts to rescue them, my grandfather died in Cuban never meeting any of his grandchildren poor and hungry, where before the revolution he had been a successful butcher.

Those who are amused with Casto's ability to withstand years of US sanctions and think highly of him because of it, claim to have 'wonderful' vacations in Cuba where the people look 'happy', tell me they would like to visit again before the Americans are allowed, must fail to recognize suffering. I had one friend tell me of his great vacation in Cuba where the girls are so willing and beautiful and the food and rum were cheap, i couldn't help but imagine he may have banged a cousin who is now forced to prostitution and most probably couldn't afford the cheap food and rum he so enjoyed.

I'm Cuban American and am not amused with the stories of the great Cuba with only European tourists exploiting an unfortunate situation created by twisted idea of government.

F* Castro and i hope he dies soon, he's lasted too long already.

Re: Fidel Castro resigns as Cuban President

nj chuy, I can understand your frustrations with peoples ignorance of the darker side of Cuba. There was a very interesting article in the Times on Saturday which highlighted this. Eight people living in a one bedroomed flat with horizontal partitions for sleeping.A desperate lack of food, theft, robbery and violence committed by desperate people. If it is such a paradise on earth, one must ask why so many people would risk their lives on wooden rafts to cross to the States?
I would never visit Cuba for the same reasons I wouldn't go to Burma.
