Yes. It was a year ago that Claude Nobs was injured in a skiing accident. I'm sure that Michael Schumacher will be getting the best attention.

Not to mention Natasha Richardson, who tragically died after sustaining a head injury whilst skiing.

I'm watching the latest set of documentaries by Louis Theroux. This time he is in LA and a couple of weeks ago he visited people who were dying from various conditions.

One guy had come into the high dependency unit from his initial emergency care after an overdose. He had brain damage. His prognosis was "very poor" and his family were told that he would never recover from his persistent vegetative state. His scans consistently showed no improvement and all tests pointed to the same outcome; they should switch off his life support.

The family, obviously, wanted to keep fighting and the hospital staff were doing their best to manage their expectations, as well as give them a gentle reality check.

After 37 days, he started showing signs of awareness and started responding to various stimuli.

When the camera crews came back a couple of weeks later, he was awake, eating from a spoon and able to answer simple questions.

The follow up several months later showed him walking back into the hospital to meet the team that cared for him. He had made a virtually full recovery.

I'm not saying this will happen with Schumacher but sometimes the medical professionals get it wrong. The brain is probably still far too complex for us to understand fully.

Knock the door? It's more of a big gate with cameras and stuff, the house is not even visible!
I pass quite regularly but have not yet popped in for a coffee.

"Out of ICU" just means he is "stable", and no longer requires intensive watching over.

Now he lies in a special sort-of bed, attached to tubes and machines, having therapy to keep his muscles from atrophying.

Very sad, for everyone involved.

It would be a waste of money to not close the case, if they believe he was guilty there is nothing they can do

I disagree. If any of us had an accident like this, would we expect our employer to pay our salaries indefinitely? If Michael can no longer deliver the goods, then his sponsors are not obliged to continue paying him.

Yes. It was inevitable and I am surprised that some sponsorship didn't end earlier. I think it is likely that clauses were written in to cover injury or other events. It not as if they are abandoning him to poverty
