Benefits Street - interesting Channel 4 documentary

There's an interesting and well made documentary airing on Channel 4 in the UK now called Benefits Street. It follows the lives of residents in a street in Birmingham where most people are on welfare. You can watch it on

Re: Benefits Street - interesting Channel 4 documentary

Sadly this is just one of thousands upon thousands of streets like this in the UK.

Take note that every house has big TVs, laptops, latest game stations etc.

Scum of the earth and an embarrassment to the UK, every single one of them.

Exactly, scum of the earth.
Although they are only partly to blame, the government are also to blame.

Re: Benefits Street - interesting Channel 4 documentary

I managed to stomach one episode of it but what struck me was that the immigrants who didn't qualify for benefits, couldn't speak English and everyone seemed to despise were managing to support themselves through their own hard graft.

Basically, the odds were stacked higher against the immigrants and they were the ones managing to scrape an existence. OK, so they weren't exactly in the lap of luxury but it made a mockery of some of the other people in the documentary.

Although, and it's another topic, they were saying they would not live like that back in Romania......well you do have a choice.

The Romanian gypsies were making money by searching for scrap metal in rubbish and then leaving the rubbish lying around behind them. They were doubtless also claiming child benefit which is available to all families, even if the kids are living in another EU country.

Very harsh, I quite admire Mr. 50p. Danny the shoplifter really is a disgraceful person though.

Re: Benefits Street - interesting Channel 4 documentary

The young couple with 2 kids, i think are trying their best but are just clueless kids themselves.

Imagine having your toddler up till 5am!!! Then getting annoyed because hes cranky when trying to get him dressed at 8h30! Really?

Its like an episode of Shameless but far worse.

I couldnt imagine trying to bring up my children in that street, that type of environment. letting my kids hang round with drunks and junkies.
Im so thankful that I dont have to.

Yes, they had split & she claimed maybe lone parent or... support with rent..
When he moved back in they never declared it. Ooops.

I thought what was really sad/funny: When the woman who came to visit to help them with their kids behavior...
And as she was stood outside their door there was a man showing his stab wounds (plural) and talking about how they happened. This was in front of the kids too.

"Do you think the behavioral problems might be linked to the environment?" Errrrrrrrrmmmmmmm Yuuuup!!

Benefit fraud costs £1.2bn a year - 0.7% of total benefit expenditure.

Aggressive tax avoidance by companies and individuals who could pay their share but prefer not to costs HMRC, by conservative estimates, £5bn a year and outright evasion costs about the same again - £5bn.

Google paid £3.4m tax on £3.2bn revenue in the UK and now they are busy lobbying the G20 to stop the proposed closing of international tax loopholes.

I know where I think we should be focussing our efforts and our scorn.

I agree. Once those loopholes and tax avoiders are in prison, all these people will suddenly get off their arses and become model citizens.

Post War Dreams

Tell me true, tell me why, was Jesus crucified
Is it for this that Daddy died?
Was it for you? Was it me?
Did I watch too much T.V.?
Is that a hint of accusation in your eyes?
If it wasn't for the nips
Being so good at building ships
The yards would still be open on the clyde.
And it can't be much fun for them
Beneath the rising sun
With all their kids committing suicide.
What have we done, Maggie what have we done?
What have we done to England?
Should we shout, should we scream
"What happened to the post war dream?"
Oh Maggie, Maggie what have we done?
