Another survey - Best UK Cities

I know that these surveys are so subjective but it is nice to see Hastings appearing in the Top 10, rather than the other end of the scale.

The UK’s best cities to live and work in:

http://uk.finance.yahoo.com/photos/t...831294406.html

1. Cambridge
2. London
3. Aldershot
4. Reading
5. Milton Keynes
6. Peterborough
7. Luton
8. Worthing
9. Hastings

But Aldershot is a dump ? Declining, Army leaving, it's a ghost town. Boarded up shops, empty houses , awful Pubs, zero night life...

...don't get me started on my home town Luton, you'll end up on Prozac.

I was puzzled to see those two, in particular, included. As I said, it is subjective

Don't they mean the best English cities? It's very South centric.

It seems to me that they only surveyed southerners. There's nowhere north of Watford on that list. ( well not Watford literally as obviously Luton and Milton Keynes and Cambridge are but the mythical north/south divide Watford)
I think it should read the best cities in Southern England personally.

It may just be a coincidence that the article that includes the survey focuses on the North/South divide

Luton would indeed be my idea of a nightmare

Whenever I have to drive through it or past it- I always think that.

Same for me, also for Milton Keynes or Aldershot

Re: Another survey - Best UK Cities

I grew up within spitting distance of Aldershot (but just into Surrey, I hasten to add); close enough to hear the IRA bomb go off in the barracks in the 70's.

Seriously ..... No.3?

I know the army and it's associated facilities have been completely scaled down, but a garrison town is just that.

In this survey, London and Luton end up among the worst towns and cities in the UK

This list does look particularly poor. Even if we only go for southern towns - where's Bath or Gloucester or any other pretty West Country Town? Not to mention Chester or York, northern Roman Towns, or Edinburgh, since it says "UK" etc., etc.

I totally agree. I am from London & not sure I would count it as with first two. Rush hours in London have got worse and worse as each decades unfolds. there are much more pleasant cities in UK to live and work.

Re: Another survey - Best UK Cities

Does Glasgow count as UK ?

Many big name companies have a place there, especially the banks. Close to the great outdoors, you can find bleach and self raising flour, a 30 mile commute takes less than an hour at peak time, a point of lager costs usually less than £3, you can rent a four bedroom house with a garden for about £600 (no i did not miss a zero), you can buy the same house for less than £100,000 (no i did not miss a zero).. Hell quite a few people even speak English.

When they say city, they must mean town, and by Reading, they mean Henley on Thames.

I lived there for two years back in 2006 and it wasn't as bad as you make out. A lot of money has been spent on the town centre, transport links are excellent and there some fantastic restaurants (Indian, Chinese, Lebanese, Thai etc..). I can understand that is was probably quite dire in the 90s and early noughties but since then it's definitely improved. We lived near the South Beds Golf club, so a slightly nicer part of town

Re: Another survey - Best UK Cities

I guess that you could pick just about any town in the world and find people who would not want to live anywhere else. Also, there would be people who couldn't wait to leave, or are glad they left.
