Re: How will the Scottish vote go???

The white paper is lacking in detail for the vote to go in Scotland's favour.

Since the unionists seem to be completely unwilling to put up any kind of fight whatsoever, rude emotion and sentimentality might well prevail after all.

Re: How will the Scottish vote go???

Osborne - backed by the three main parties - played the trump card by confirming that if Scotland gains independence, they wont be able to keep the UK pound.

The vote will be close, but I predict that more people will vote in favour of keeping the pound, than for an independent Scotland.

Re: How will the Scottish vote go???

The only person in Scotland with whom I speak regularly is my father, I'm a pseudo-Scot myself. It seems that it's quite safe for the 'No' vote at present, but if there's one person who has the guile to turn that around it's Alec Salmond, perhaps he's Scotland's answer to Blocher.

From my own obervations London does not want to leave well enough alone and is currently risking antagonising the Scots with talk of making them ditch the Pound as their currency in case of independence. The Scot's reply is that in that case it won't take on any share of the UK's enormous national debt.

It's starting to get quite interesting now, if you like that sort of thing.

Don't you think it's bad enough having Ticino attached to Switzerland?

There are many Italian Scots, perhaps it could work out.

Very similar history in the 13C- except the Scotts were sold down the river by their own (and the English)

Re: How will the Scottish vote go???

When my dad was litlle, in 1920s, 100s of Ticinese families came over to work here and escape abject poverty- they were (sadly) thought to be just dirt poor and uneducated immigrants and not very welcome...

Re: How will the Scottish vote go???

I'm totally ignorant in scottish politics.

- would they still be part of EU if leaving the UK?
- republic or monarchy?
- what happens to all Windsor property in Scotland...nationalised?
- What happens to the non-scott living there for several years if Scotland decides for independence?
- What happens to the north sea oil?

I wouldn't trust Salmond and Sturgeon as far as I could throw them.

Don't know about the EU, but the monarchy and commonwealth would be retained.
I imagine property rights would be respected. To vote in the referendum you must be living in Scotland and an EU or commonwealth national (not Swiss..), Citizenship will be offered to any resident British citizen and any non-Brit who has lived there for 10 years, and anyone with a Scottish parent or grandparent.
The North Sea oil has almost run out.

Re: How will the Scottish vote go???

It has been said that Scotland would have to apply to be part of the EU and that there is no guarantee that they would be accepted.

What I don't get is how passports would work. Clearly any new born Scot would hold Scottish nationality. But what about current Brits either born in Scotland or not born in Scotland but living there? Will they all be entitled to Scottish nationality yet keep their original British nationality?

…. I don't think it will happen though.

Edit: answered above whilst I was posting!
