| | Re: World War 3 or just a local spat in Ukraine? | Quote: | | | | | The problem with that is that armed citizens fighting unformed soldiers are called "Partisans" and Partisans are not under the protection of the Geneva convention.
That means any civilian under arms who has been captured can be shot on sight without a trial. Have a look in the history books what happened to partisans in ww2. | | | | | Thats why I said that in Kyiv's case it's not possible to declare an Open City because the Ukrainian governments decided
already to defend it 'tooth and nail' with whatever forces, including civilians that come forward to bear arms.

| | Re: World War 3 or just a local spat in Ukraine? | Quote: | | | | | Switzerland is probably the most right wing and anti-woke country in Western Europe. I'm not really sure i'm the one who should feel like a hypocrite for living here.
I feel sorry for all the Ukrainians who thought they would be offered some level of protection, although one wonders what they really expected from Western leaders who are more concerned with appearing politcally correct than they are about looking after their own constituents.
At least they got 4 years of peace under Trump. | | | | | Actually, the most right wing country in Western Europe is the UK who voted in the Conservative party with a huge majority, sorry for sharing facts.

It actually sounds more like scaremongering propaganda, I don't think they can actually change much on the ground given their numbers and the overall Russian force.

Man, I need to say that it's very disturbing for me what happens in the Ukraine. Until the last moment I was naive enough to believe that we (at least in Europe) have these ways of solving problems or making politics already behind us (in the history). But now I am realizing that Russia (USSR) never paid reparations, never introduced Multi-Kulti or any way to change it's mentality/attitude. Never purged themselves, as for example Germany did. In other words - they never said - we're sorry and we regret for what we did.
They never looked for redemption as far as I know.
And that's giving us extremely important lesson for now and for the future.

Apparently the kremlin is getting worried about the protests in Russia and the ability of Russians to see beyond the state propaganda and is now restricting Facebook. https://www.reuters.com/business/med...ip-2022-02-25/ | The following 4 users would like to thank gaburko for this useful post: | |

Belarus declared mobilization. Either you go to the military forces or you go to jail. I wonder what Putin is counting on as many young people in Belarus support opposition so they are less than eager to fight with Ukrainians. A friend of a friend says that he will try to surrender as soon as possible.

| | Re: World War 3 or just a local spat in Ukraine? | Quote: | | | | | | | | | | Why the hell not earlier. It is not these weapons were not available earlier.
Why was Poland so coy and haven't shipped armaments earlier is beyond me unless they are so low on stock themselves they feared left unprepared in case Russia made an excursion? Or were they fearing Russia's retaliation? Also the handling of the Belarus immigrant border crisis was very tame, Poland could have worked out some schemes to hurt Belarus - for example unexpected repairs to railroads or highways but they haven't. I guess it has been bullied into submission by the powerful European trading partners of Belarus.
Now, if only US and Europe dealt Iran-like embargo on Russia's oil and fuel. Hard and costly but a war is even more so.
