They look more like civilians than soldiers I´m afraid.
Civilians tied up and shot in the head infront of their homes. The SS would be proud.

Russian barbarianism.

And then the military cars loaded with washing machines. I wonder if an average Russian really cannot afford to buy a washing machine?

They made a market in Belorus to sell looted goods.

Does anyone understand what Putin is planning next? Because nobody is buying they are just retreating and they'll leave Ukraine alone without destroying other cities or villages and unfortunately killing more civilians.

Let's agree to disagree on this one.
Sure, but as a swiss person. You're wrong. It's nothing more than a shortened way of saying Amerikaner and it's used all throughout the german speaking world, not only in Switzerland.

I'm pretty sure any other native speakers on this forum can back me up on this.

Perhaps aleydis heard it mentioned with a certain "undertone", it could have happened. But then it's valid for many other people(s) so nothing new here. Context is everything.

Scary guy.

Quote:
It’s the second time you’ve mentioned that if there is no progress it would lead to an escalation. What does “escalation” mean in this context?

SK Well, escalation in this context means that in the face of an existential threat – and that means a non-victory, by the way, or an alleged defeat – Russia could escalate, and there are dozens of places in the world where it would have a direct confrontation with the United States.

BM So your suggestion is that, on the one hand, we could have an escalation towards the possible use of nuclear weapons – if there is an existential danger to Russia – and, on the other, an escalation towards conflict in other areas beyond Ukraine. Am I following you correctly?

SK I wouldn’t rule it out. We are living in absolutely a new strategic situation. Normal logic dictates what you have said.
Existential threat for Russia means no victory in this occupation war, apparently.
He really said it all.

Are there more Kremlinoids to read about and get scared of?

That's exactly the sentence that made me worry. If this is how they all look at this, this becomes a very binary game. His thoughts on NATO and Art. 5 are also not very flattering - but of course this interview is also meant to scare us.

Re: World War 3 or just a local spat in Ukraine?

Retired US Army Major General Mike Repass, gives his well-informed view of the war in Ukraine. For the past six years, he has advised the Ukrainian military on a US government contract.

The key questions now are "how much of the Ukrainian army has survived" and "how combat capable". The Russians took heavy losses and so, presumably, did the Ukrainians.

You can go and hug people who were in real danger hiding in their cellars for weeks while their cities have been bombed before they were able to flee. They are in your town already.

It’s not. It’s just like saying Germans, the Brits etc.
People will use "Amerikaner" in such a context.

Nope, not at all. There's a reason for the Germans' "Ami go home" instead of "Amerikaner/Americans go home". The connotation is the same here AFAIA.

That said, language evolves and connotations may change. I wouldn't be surprised if, for example, younger folks (no idea about your age) saw it differently than e.g. boomers.

Best way to define "Ami" would be the way we use "Yanks" As I said before, it´s all in the context.

Re: World War 3 or just a local spat in Ukraine?

I was about to go on a rant about the hypocrisy of 1tv and RTR Planeta reporting, when I remembered a comment widely shared on Russian social media lately and which found "understanding" even with the older generation in my family (again deepl with my corrections)

"One day the Minister of Finance appeared on TV, pale as death, and said:
The financial crisis won't affect us. Because. I'm telling you.
- The population, aware of the statements of officials, swore softly and went to buy salt, matches, and sugar.

The next day, the embarrassed Minister of Commerce appeared on TV and said:
The stock of bread and necessities makes us proud to say that hunger and commodity shortages do not threaten us. Here are the numbers. Here are the numbers.
- "Oh!" said the population and bought more flour and wheat products.

The Minister of Agriculture danced on the rostrum and said happily:
"An unprecedented harvest! Export hopes! We are reborn! The stores are cracking!
- <obscenities here> - The population was horrified and ran to convert their savings into foreign currency.

Real estate prices will fall! A penthouse for every student! In the near future! The Minister of Construction didn't flinch.
- What's the <obscenity> is going on, huh? - The population howled and ran to buy kerosene, kerosene lamps, firewood and coal.

A modern, contract-based army. Tomorrow. And grenades for the new system. There are no such grenades in the world yet. - The Minister of Defense said firmly. - Well, what do we need it for? We have tons of money. Reserves, reserves, and a surplus.
- Mommma!... the population squeaked and started digging out shelters.

It's all awesome! Do you understand?! AWESOME!!! - the president said. - We could build communism today. The only thing that's stopping us is that we'd all have nothing to do tomorrow. So you can sleep in peace! It couldn't be more stable! Pensioners are buying caviar by the bucketful! I foresee a qualitative leap, a huge leap forward. By leaps and bounds to prosperity and affluence. The Caribbean is drawing nearer. From there we threaten the world. One hundred and thirty quintals of roses in every bed. The milk yields will be reduced altogether. Cows can't carry udders. The population resents the cheapness. South America is asking to be part of us as a state farm. Hoorah!
- What are you beasts cooking there?! - The population shouted and changed into clean clothes just in case...

Oh, I hope that Belarus, North Korea, Eritrea and Syria will hear them out with utmost attention. Oh, and Russia will hear out Russia, of course. How could I forgot.

I don't know about the rules of the SC, but I am sure if it comes to the discussion, China will abstain. There are two totalitarian regimes among the 5 perm members of UNSC, one of them is smart.
