Re: World War 3 or just a local spat in Ukraine?

It's kind of sad that they were able to pull this off - but yet blew up the wrong vehicle.

Though, of course, it depends on what the objective was to begin with.

Killing the kids and letting the parents alive is a common intimidation tactic of organized crime.

If the US (and Russia) can do targeted killings in foreign countries, who says other nation-states can't?

Or is there another UN-carta that the US hasn't signed?
;-)

Personally, I'm more worried about all the oligarchs being killed. That's some serious cleansing.

We must be nice to Musk while he is providing Starlink internet service to Ukraine.
As I feared

Ukrainian troops have encountered issues with Starlink communication devices on the frontline, leading to a “catastrophic” loss in communication, reports Financial Times, citing Ukrainian officials.
I hope Musk is not playing dangerous games.

given his temper tantrum over the thailand rescue case, it would not surprise me. but hopefully a case of UA running so fast into previously RU controlled space that they are falling foul of the blocks that were in place on RU.

Indeed, that's how Russia operates in Ukraine now.

I wonder if EU politicians supporting Russia agree with what they see there. Alliance for Germany especially. Do they like those blood stained money? I don't have any intel on that. I suppose money don't smell, eh.

And here I am thinking that the character of Peter Isherwell in that black satirical comedy "Don't Look Up" is shaped after him...

Quite interesting. Apparently, Ukraine has also attacked a rail fuel depot in Donetsk that serves the railway lines to the South. So I guess this all related to the Kherson offensive.

Vova must be fuming.

What civilians, random civilians? What were they doing there? Transporting fuel to keep the oppression machine running?

Well, there was obviously some traffic on the bridge. There is footage of the explosion which shows a few trucks and cars.

Some time ago I read the Kersch Strait bridge was a prime target for Ukraine but they had nothing powerful enough in their arsenal to damage the bridge with a remote attack, it would need a tomahawk cruise missile or similar.

Consequently, I lean towards the idea that explosives were attached to the bridge. Looking at the damage it must have been well planned, pity the rail bridge was not so damaged, good close up video here.

As I posted earlier blocking military supplies to Crimea would be difficult due to that bridge.

well its obviously sad when civilians are killed. in this case i believe it was a husband and wife. but alls fair in love and war so it is what it is.

i just always find it interesting that statements such as "pointing at someone else after you've done something wrong and crying like a schoolkid "They did it as well" doesn't make your screw up any more morally right" seem like they only apply to one side of the war.

Is this why I have seen so many posts from you about Ukrainian civil casualties? I believe there were 17 in Zaporizhzhia in the last days.

Putin getting desperate and making irrational changes while trying to divert the blame for the military disaster.

It is claimed Sergei Shoigu, Minister of Defence of the Russian Federation has resigned along with Valery Vasilyevich Gerasimov, the Chief of the General Staff of the Russian Armed Forces and First Deputy Minister of defense.

Yesterday was Putin's 70th and here is a picture of his birthday cake.

That must be a real letdown for "Vova".

In 2006 he got the assassination of Anna Politkovskaya as a ...birthday present! Exactly on 7th of October.

For those who either don't know or pretend they don't know who this lady was, perhaps you should read her book "Putin's Russia".

Or about Politkovskaya's biography, or what she wrote about the first and the second Chechen wars which she documented risking her life, health, and ultimately....her life.

I wonder what he'll get next year. And the year after the next year....and so on.

Re: World War 3 or just a local spat in Ukraine?

The Kirch Strait Bridge has three lanes, two road, and a rail track.

The explosion severely damaged one road lane requiring three spans to be replaced.

Russia believes the one remaining road lane may have been weakened so are not allowing heavy trucks. The rail part only has superficial damage so will likely continue to transport heavy military equipment.

The repairs will probably take at least two months depending on how much of the equipment needed to fabricate the road spans is still in place.

Difficult to see how a 25m long truck could damage three spans each 35/40m but if it was sabotage why hit only one lane.
