Re: World War 3 or just a local spat in Ukraine?

Russian social media today is full of claims that Ukraine hit an ammo store in Makiivka formerly Dmytriivsk, which is an industrial city in Donetsk Oblast.
Claims the building also housed soldiers with up to 400 reported dead, hard to believe even Russia would billet soldiers in an ammo store

Would you believe that they dug trenches in a nuclear disaster zone?

Now we know that it can be even worse than Ursula von der Leyen

No, not a spoof, and the background noise is real.

She is a disgrace, and that Scholz has not fired her is worse. I don't trust anything they say about "Zeitenwende" and increasing military spending until I see it. Latest is that Germany *plans* to reach 2% defense spending in ... 2025.

It's all really sad. We need a grown-up Germany to counterbalance the dangerous and laughable attempts of Macron to behave as a super-power. All we see is intellectually challenged imbeciles playing politics. With this "crop" of politicians, increasing military spending might be even dangerous?

I struggle to think of one german politician I don't loathe. Maybe Strack-Zimmerman but even then, it's a big maybe.

Re: World War 3 or just a local spat in Ukraine?

Professor Michael Clarke, Visiting Professor in the Department of War Studies and Fellow of King’s College London, Director General of the Royal United Services Institute from 2017-2015 and now a Distinguished Fellow at RUSI (source) says that Russian troops in Ukraine, most of whom he says come from Russia's east, are being told that Poland has invaded Ukraine and is preparing to invade Russia.

Re: World War 3 or just a local spat in Ukraine?

PooTin must be cursing the mild weather in Europe.

I don't quite understand why the west are reluctant to provide Ukraine with the heavy tanks and weapons Ukraine needs to decisively push the Russians out. The Russian army have been incompetent, but they are learning from their mistakes. Why wait for them to actually become professional?

Also, the longer the war continues, the harder it will be for Ukraine to "normalise" post-war. For example, soldiers will find it harder to resume to a "civilised" life, weapons will be everywhere, and the refugee diaspora will find it harder to return home, if at all.

Mostly people just pretend that the danger doesn't exist, it is easier to live this way. And for a long time there was a narrative in Europe that Russia, under Putin, is a benevolent dictatorship, a necessity to countermeasure the American hegemony.
Occasional killing of a journalist or a dissident is only an error in communications and brutal army tactics in Chechnya or Syria is more a sign of cute cultural diversity that we sadly cannot comprehend.
The far left still see it as a worthy successor of USSR, the far right see it as a promised non-woke land, and the many opportunist don't care if Ukraine is subjugated into another non-sovereign brutal autocracy like Belarus, as long as they don't have to change their perception of a comfortable life. Till the next episode.

Re: World War 3 or just a local spat in Ukraine?

Shouldn't we negotiate with Russia? Putin seems ready.

Official Kremlin read of from Putin's call with Tayyip:

"The presidents touched on the situation around Ukraine. The Russian side emphasised the destructive role of the Western states, which are pumping the Kiev regime full of weapons and military equipment and also providing operational and targeting information.

In view of President Erdogan’s offer for Turkiye to mediate a political settlement to the conflict, Vladimir Putin again reaffirmed that Russia is open to a serious dialogue – under the condition that the Kiev authorities meet the clear demands that have been repeatedly laid out, and recognise the new territorial realities."

I don't think that's for us to decide.

Also, he want's to come out of this with a new chunk of land to show, and encourage him to try it again.

Irony and sarcasm are illegal in Switzerland.

But yeah, I think negotiations can start once we can find a leprechaun or a unicorn to moderate the talks.

Garry Kasparov keeps making a somewhat similar point. He argues the West does not want Ukraine to get a full win as he argues the West fears this may lead to Putin's fall, Russia's collapse as a governable state and therefore total chaos.

No idea, but it is an interesting thought. If true, probably inspired by US experience in Iraq.

Re: World War 3 or just a local spat in Ukraine?

Kyrylo Budanov, Chief of Defence Intelligence of Ukraine, recently gave an interview forecasting, amongst other things, a new major Ukraine offensive.

The infamous Igor Girkin is not only forecasting major Ukraine success but a consequent internal battle in Russia by politicians trying to keep their jobs.
