Depends on laws of a country. But well, "law" means different things to different cultures.

I find it ironic that the Russians are being accused of breaking the law for crossing the border in an attempt to rescue the life of the fleeing president -- which might even be legal and certainly was morally correct.

But the very people who actually made the president flee, tried to murder him and illegaly removed him from power -- these people are not mentioned in this "breaking the law" post.

When the Russian Special Forces crossed the Ukrainian international border to rescue the Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovich, don't you think this cannot be illegal by definition?
So if Ukrainian special forces cross the border to rescue Savchenko (who is being held by Russia illegally) this would also be ok?

In any case, point 3 on the list (rescue Yanukovich attempts) was the least of the bunch. Putin admitting to sending Russian special forces to take control of Ukrainian government buildings, airports, etc. is clearly in violation of international laws, no argument there.

Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovich certainly had authorized his own rescue He still was the elected president so he could have allowed the Russians legally get into the country.
I'm not sure if the Ukrainian laws allow for the President to act unilaterally in making military decisions, usually parliament has to also authorize military requests of foreign countries, so that is debatable.

Interview here in the Guardian with a Russian soldier injured in East Ukraine.

Might just be propaganda but one part rings true "A tank is a very capricious machine – you try to shoot but not a God damn thing comes out. The stupid things wouldn’t fire."

Who else than a Russian soldier would think it normal that a tank gun does not fire first time every time

Re: World War 3 or just a local spat in Ukraine?

Former Odessa mayor candidate on Russia's top TV channel shocks Russian viewers by saying Russia's invasion of Ukraine is on par with Nazi Germany. Ouch.

Quote:
A formerly pro-Russian businessman from Odesa created quite a commotion on Russia’s Channel One TV when he discussed Russia’s aggression in Ukraine.

Businessman Vadym Chornyi, a former candidate for mayor of Odessa (in 1998 and 2010), was invited as a guest for the political talk show program Time Will Tell on Russia’s popular Channel One TV station to discuss a proposed bill in Ukraine’s Verkhovna Rada that would criminalize denial of Russian aggression in Ukraine. Apparently he had been chosen because of his earlier pro-Russian views, according to Patrioty Ukrainy. However, to everyone’s shock and surprise, he proceeded to explain why there will be no Russian Spring in Odesa and told his Russian listeners that Russia was similar to Nazi Germany.

When the talk show host Pyotr Tolstoy stated that Russia had based its laws on criminal prosecution for “distortions of history” on the Nuremburg Tribunal, Chornyi responded that the Russian government itself was facing a second Nuremberg Tribunal.

“Are you comparing us to Nazi Germany?” the TV host asked. “Absolutely,” Chornyi answered.

“No person in his right mind can deny Russian aggression,” he said. “Where do they (militants in the Donbas) get their tanks, where do they get the BUKs, where do they get their surface to air missiles?” he asked rhetorically, telling his Russian audience that “you can deny it till you’re blue in the face.”

If life was so great then why do I know so many people who risked their lives running over the minefields? Many of them now with good careers.

About "even a car" Now I ask are you serious? 15 year waiting lists for something awful!

About "people are mad about working on constructions sites" Of course not, but those poor people never had a decent education fitting them for something better; you cannot blame the West for the education failures in their own countries.

Uhhhhhhhh construction worker not "educated"

Re: World War 3 or just a local spat in Ukraine?

There are reports today in social media that the Ukrainian Govt. started a new full offensive with tanks and heavy artillery against Donetsk (DNR).

Sounds unlikely, why would they start a new offensive against the Russian army who will crush them again?

Or is this the start of the long feared Russian land bridge offensive?

Reports are quoting this article here; it is dated 9th April and no other newspaper has commented since so I assume we can forget it?

I believe as much as Russia would like the land bridge, it may not be logistically/politically possible for them right now. Read these scnarios put forward by Stratfor:

https://www.stratfor.com/analysis/ga...sian-offensive

To make the land bridge, it would require a troop force in the 20-30,000 area. And then to hold and supply this area would be a large logistical feat as well. At the moment, Russia is trucking massive amounts of supplies into pro-Russian areas of Donbass. I'm not sure they could continue that on an even bigger scale.

Sending conscripts to fight in Ukraine is not very popular in Russia, and I doubt Russia can summon up enough "volunteers" to number 20-30,000. So it would mean Russia sending in troop numbers up to 20-30,000 on a permanent or long-term basis, which would be a troop involvement that even the Kremlin wouldn't be able to deny (so far Russian troop number in Ukraine have been estimated maybe 2 to 5 thousand, and usually only for "surges" or "offensives", and then pulled back)

I think the land bridge may not be worth such a gamble. Or on the other hand, who knows what's in Putin's head, maybe it is...

The extremist right-wing ukrainian militia got incorporated into ukranian army when the truce was signed, but were otherwise left unchanged. These former militia units never accepted the truce, could be they decided to turn the heat back up again. So I wouldn't be too quick about dismissing these reports, even more so as other sites raise similar issues:
http://ukraineunderattack.org/en/rus...artillery.html

and Yahoo reports mutual reproaches:

First of all I would like to find out if there were/are any extremist right-wing Ukrainian militias.
Who can tell? It's incredible how much fluff we can post about things we know little about (first hand knowledge, obviously). Ah, the links Yes, we have links to prove everything on internet.

Right now each side is just taking pot-shots at each other. There won't be any major advances without an order from either Kiev or Moscow, and at the moment, I don't think either wants that. Poroshenko knows the Russian army can destroy him and sees little other options than to leave Donbass in it's current form and hope for no further offensives by the Russians. Putin I'm sure would love to take "NovyRussia", but the logistical and political problems I pointed out above is a thorn in his side and he may be calculating if it's worth the cost.

As for militias, there are alot of Ukrainian militias fighting on the front right now, as Ukraine also has a problem with getting enough conscripts, and the militias are willing and ready to fight. There is a small amount of right-wing people there, maybe a couple hundred, there are probably as many or more right-wingers fighting on the pro-Russian side as well. The militias had to be brought into the military structure (they weren't before) to have more control over them. The Ukrainian government still doesn't trust them 100% and doesn't give them larger weapons like tanks, and no real funding either (mostly volunteer donations).

Despite the right-wing Ukrainians being a very small number with something less than 5% political power, the Russian media loves to latch on to this group and make them into their "boogeyman". Everybody in Russia knows who "right-sector" is and are told ridiculous stories about how they love to kill children and drink their blood, etc. in order to provoke emotions on the Russian side and justify the war, ie: "we have to save Donbass from these evil right-sector nazis!" Nothing more than typical war propaganda. it would be like Russia invading the USA to save the Americans from the KKK. It's true the KKK exists, but it's a small number and don't really have any influence.

Interesting that you doubt one , but not the other. Very telling.

By the way the increase in skirmishes, to call them that, has been confirmed by OSZE. They cite JCCC, a local group of russian and ukraine officers, who say the fights around Donezk were started by a push of the ukrainian "Right Sector".

Today is the 1 year anniversary of mass killings in Odessa. Last year a lot of people have been killed and injured on this day. To this day nobody was charged with murder. Today Ukraine has deployed over 3,000 law enforcers in Odessa to keep order.

Why pick Odessa; death toll under 50?
The people who started the rebellion in East Ukraine are responsible for around 7,000 deaths

You may want to swap out corrupt and criminal and use something else as these two apply to just about every politician that ever lived. Also many countries have done the same, including the US. Also rescuing very wealthy ex pollies can be a very profitable exercise. Billionair ex politicians in need of urgent help dont mind spending a hundred million or whatever to be resued. Nothing to loose you see.
