Australia - what is going on?

Australia is my home but it is not what it once was or could be, bad politics and "popularist media driven policy" is going to send it to the wall. What does the rest of the world think?

A great speech detailing some concerns. http://junkee.com/tony-abbott-slamme...try-back/30146

Re: Australia - what is going on?

Let's just say this:

I've written two very long posts and deleted both of them because I just can't believe what I'd written.

I'm so ashamed to be Australian at the moment it's not funny, but I know that most other Australians feel the same way.

We simply have no leadership for the country whatsoever, and the pathetic media circus has robbed us of any ability to make an informed decision for ourselves.

Let's not forget that the only reason Abbott is in power is because we hated the other guy even more.

Even if we took Abbott out (not in an assassination way) who do we have to replace him with?

Gina Rinehart is the prime minister of Australia at the moment.

I don't know much about Australia, but Barry Humphries is great. So versatile and looks better without the wig:

Re: Australia - what is going on?

No wonder the Australian political system doesn't have a chance.

"We are facing a political crisis that will seriously affect our future and survival as a Nation"

"Ahhh, Thor is from Home & Away"

"....but we have a major crisis and we should.... well, bugger it. Yep, he's from Home & Away"

Re: Australia - what is going on?

That was a great speech from the WA greens senator. It's come up about 20 times on my Facebook news feed.

Yeah it's really dismal times for us back home. Politics are out, environment is out, cricket is back and boganism is back in a big way !!!

For us I guess it's a good time to be living overseas but as you said, after one term Tony who do we have otherwise ???? I'd love to see the speaker get replaced, the two main parties replaced and some fresh blood brought in. (the afore mentioned greens senator ?)

Whilst we're at it, bring in the republic referendum and lets get some shit really happening !!!!

Hell I really don't know. I guess only time will tell...

Re: Australia - what is going on?

australia is not alone with the problems to solve, nearly everywhere the countries have economical problems like mass exodus from other countries to escape from poverty, creating new job markets, solve the problem with growing number of retirees and the financial outcome.
The politicians still do not their job for which they are being elected, best example is angela merkel of germay .....
If you can understand enough german, thats what is all about:

Our economy is doing well, standard of living is good. Only since the reign of 'Abbottism' has the unemployment been so high...

Our sole problem at the moment is leadership, federal and state.....

If only the people had of just forgiven Gillard for the way in how she came to power, we would be on the right track. I hated her to start with but then I took notice of what she was getting done I became a fan..... Shit ay, nice one Australia....

Re: Australia - what is going on?

Australia has a reputation for being a leader in environmental protection, with tight border controls to prevent contamination of local flora and fauna. An eco-holiday destination with exciting wildlife everywhere, redbacks under the bed, crocs in the pool, possums under the house, box jellies in the surf, etc.

It was a bit surprising then to learn that Australia relies mostly on coal generated electricity and is the world's largest coal exporter, and that the government has recently approved the dumping of dredged sediment in the Great Barrier Reef as part of a project to create one of the world's biggest coal ports.

With all that lovely sunshine (and not forgetting Australia having its hottest year on record in 2013), maybe they ought to swap some of that China-bound coal for a few cheap solar panels.

Re: Australia - what is going on?

This has actually been going on for as long as I can remember with the dumping of sediment in the Great Barrier Reef.

I am a proud Australian but I believe I left Australia at the right time. Australia isnt what it used to be. We have universal problems in every category. You name it we have it.

Just to touch up on a particular topic, lets talk about housing. I read a report that 20 years ago only 2 suburbs in Sydney had house prices over a million Australian dollars. Fast forward to 2014 that number has grown to over 175 suburbs in Sydney. Its ridiculous.

Our electricity and water is all privatized which the Government sold. Smart Government we have. The bills for these are extremely high.

Our taxes pay for the roads yet we still have to pay tolls to use the road. Wait that's not that worst bit. The worst bit is the Government sold the tolls to a private entity. We have tolls every where on the Highways in Sydney. When I left Sydney the price to use the Highway was about $6 and don't forget to get back on the hwy its another $6. Drive onto another Hwy and you will pay a further $6. I believe the price has gone up.

To make matters worse overseas interests, namely China, are coming into Australia and buying up all the farmlands for ridiculous prices to make way for their drilling and rigging of resources on Australian soil. There used to be a law for that but judging by the influx of overseas investors I doubt there is any laws.

IF YOU'RE AN AUSSIE YOU SHOULD REALLY WATCH THIS!

Re: Australia - what is going on?

As I see it vote buying through middle class welfare and letting Coles and Woolies buy or shutdown the competition is a major part of it. Media ownership dumbing down the public also has played a major role supporting governments running fear campaigns, "stop the boats" our country was built on immigration. Free trade agreements destroying a lot of industries.

When I started work in the oil and gas industry in the 80s there was a poster on my bosses walk stating "Please let there be another oil boom, we promise not to piss it all up against the wall this time", well we have had the resources boom and we have pissed it all away and then some. No one can tell me what is going to be the economic driver for our kids, it could be food but foreign interests are buying great tracts of land and water allocations so no benefit to the locals.

But looking from afar, all is ticketyboo in summer bay.

China is already "colonising" Africa through massive investment and development, and expanding into the South and East China Seas with her powerful new navy.

Seems risky/foolish inviting so much PRC influence into your country.

From the BBC (5 March 2014):

A generation of Australians are being priced out of the housing market, leaving many facing a "lifetime of renting", according to a report by Credit Suisse.

Chinese buyers are currently pouring in more than A$5bn ($4.5bn; £2.7bn) into the residential market every year, pushing up prices, the findings show.

The median house price in Sydney has risen by 45% in the past five years.

Re: Australia - what is going on?

I sent an text message to a group of mates in Australia to show them that a Mango in the Coop here costs almost 6chf.

.... they wrote back saying "So, they are $5 here"

When I left, mangoes were $1, and I thought that was steep.

I'm not so worried about what prices of things are now, or what they were..... but what they will be in the future.

The housing price thing is simply ridiculous. But we've addressed this already, and it upsets me absolutely.

I have a genuine fear about retirement plans and how best to form my projections based on the current price trends.
When I think about the money that can be made here in Switzerland, and I think "wow, if I plan to live tight, I'll just make it", I wonder how the hell the rest of the country plan to live.

It just seems very clear to me that we are being socially choked to death at an alarming rate.... comforted with great deals on iphones, all the while the media pulls the wool over our eyes.

We seem to have no future.
