The military has known for some time, it seems:

http://www.haaretz.com/news/world/1.579123

What was that we were saying about information being withheld?
That's not what the military said. Please check your source.

OFFICIAL STATEMENT BY CHIEF OF ROYAL MALAYSIAN AIR FORCE ON
BERITA HARIAN NEWS ARTICLE DATED 11th MARCH 2014 ON SEARCH AND RESCUE OPERATIONS IN THE STRAITS OF MALACCA

1. I refer to the Berita Harian news article dated 11th March 2014 on Search and Rescue Operations in the Straits of Malacca which (in Bahasa Malaysia) referred to me as making the following statements:

The RMAF Chief confirmed that RMAF Butterworth airbase detected the location signal of the airliner as indicating that it turned back from its original heading to the direction of Kota Bahru, Kelantan, and was believed to have pass through the airspace of the East Coast of and Northern Peninsular Malaysia.

The last time the plane was detected by the air control tower was in the vicinity of Pulau Perak in the Straits of Malacca at 2.40 in the morning before the signal disappeared without any trace, he said.

2. I wish to state that I did not make any such statements as above, what occurred was that the Berita Harian journalist asked me if such an incident occurred as detailed in their story, however I did not give any answer to the question, instead what I said to the journalist was “Please refer to the statement which I have already made on 9 March 2014, during the press conference with the Chief of Defence Force at the Sama-Sama Hotel, Kuala Lumpur International Airport”.

3. What I stated during that press conference was,

The RMAF has not ruled out the possibility of an air turn back on a reciprocal heading before the aircraft vanished from the radar and this resulted in the Search and Rescue Operations being widen to the vicinity of the waters of Pulau Pinang.

4. I request this misreporting be amended and corrected to prevent further misinterpretations of what is clearly an inaccurate and incorrect report.

5. Currently the RMAF is examining and analyzing all possibilities as regards to the airliner’s flight paths subsequent to its disappearance. However for the time being, it would not be appropriate for the RMAF to issue any official conclusions as to the aircraft’s flight path until a high amount of certainty and verification is achieved. However all ongoing search operations are at the moment being conducted to cover all possible areas where the aircraft could have gone down in order to ensure no possibility is overlooked.

6. In addition, I would like to state to the media that all information and developments will be released via official statements and press conferences as soon as possible and when appropriate. Our current efforts are focused upon on finding the aircraft as soon as possible.

Thank You

GENERAL TAN SRI DATO’SRI RODZALI BIN DAUD RMAF
Chief of Royal Malaysian Air Force

Released On:

11 March 14
Kuala Lumpur

Possible new development

Breaking: Body wearing lifejacket reported found off Malacca
Staff Reporter 2014-03-12 18:25 (GMT+8)

The Beijing News has reported that a source claiming to be local volunteer assisting in the search for missing Malaysia Airlines flight MH370 has found a dead body wearing a lifejacket in an area of the Malacca Strait. In a single-paragraph report, the website of the Chinese-language newspaper said that it was seeking to establish the reliability of the claim.

The unconfirmed report is said to have come via a new operations center established in Malacca after the search for the flight was expanded to both sides of the Malaysian peninsula in response to reports that the plane may have diverted from its planned course. The report was first passed to the center of operations for search and rescue efforts on Vietnam's Phu Quoc island.

The last contact with the plane placed it over the South China Sea on its scheduled course from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing.

The Boeing 777-200 with 239 people aboard took off early on the morning of March 8. It disappeared about an hour into the flight with no distress signal or message sent.

Having read the news story my official response is "its a load of bollocks" taking extracts of posts from pprune is like asking ef how to cap chernobyl.

There would be no disorientation due to a gradual leak, many systems involved never mind the noise.

As for the AD for cracking AD and SB airworthines directive and service bulletins are quite normal and are issued and performed on a regular basis.

I performed an AD task just last week for cracks. Every plane has cracks, if someone tells you a plane is 100% crack free they are either deluded ignorant or just lying.

As best that artice is worth lining the bottom of my aviary, nothing more .

Re: Malaysian Airlines flight missing

Life raft of some description also found in makacca but initial photo suggests a boat life raft. Fisherman found it and tied it to the boat until officials took it but it then got lost as they tried to bring the raft aboard.

So the rumours go.

I used the word seems, and at the time the report came out what I posted had been widely circulating among reputed news sources, including Reuters. Doesn't mean it is correct info, though.

In addition, it appears that they have at least an idea to look outside of the Gulf of Thailand, as the high-level military officials took CNN reporters up in a helicopter above the Malacca strait yesterday.

Pretty much. As soon as one network has "new" information, the others report it as well. That's what breaking news is all about these days. Forget accuracy, you just have to be the first to report something different.

And Swiss feature twice in the last week including one accident...
Swiss A321 at Geneva on Mar 9th 2014, tail strike on landing
"A Swiss International Airlines Airbus A321-100, registration HB-IOC performing flight LX-2806 from Zurich to Geneva (Switzerland), landed on Geneva's runway 05 at 13:57L (12:57Z) when the crew initiated and reported a go-around. The next aircraft waiting for departure was cleared for takeoff and departed. ATC subsequently queried whether their tail had contacted the runway surface, the pilot replied "not that I know". The aircraft positioned for another approach to runway 05 and landed without further incident about 20 minutes after the go-around.

A post flight examination showed significant damage to the underside of the aircraft's tail.

The airline confirmed the aircraft contacted ground during landing but asked for understanding, that further details can not be revealed due to the ongoing investigation.
