What have the Arabs given us? Maths, astronomy, scientific approach to medicine... However, that was in the golden age of Arab civilisation. Unfortunately, they've been in a bit of decline since then. It can't be money, since many Arab states are unbelievably wealthy. I put it down to their political systems. | | | | | Here is a good article on the subject of the decline of Science in the Arab/Muslim world.
However the point that needs to be made is that science may not be flourishing in its native lands, but it is amongst the Arab/Muslim diaspora. Both Nobel prizes in Physics and Chemistry by Muslim scientists were earnt from their labs in Oxford and California respectively.
The future does looks slightly better in that Qatar, Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates et al are building or have already built huge research science institutes and so for the first time in centuries there is now proper patronage of the sciences.

How ever... what is going on the middle east is horrific and I cannot understand why other countries are not able to live in peace as we Swiss do.

i just wanted to know a thing or two from the secretes… | | | | | Education, hard work, ambition, supportive families and communities, The study of the Talmud Yerushalmi raises awareness of their history and heritage, while passing on wisdom through millenniums of generations.
By the way, if you want some very deep background and learn something very interesting about this Middle East situation, review the story of Isaac and Ishmael from both the Jewish and the Muslim perspective. These are Abraham's two sons. This whole ME thing is a humongous family squabble between their mothers, Sarah and Hagar. Intrigue, jealousy, and "he said, I said" versions of the story. This is magnitudes more intense than any TV soap opera.
The lesson I pick up from the story of Isaac and Ishmael is that polygamy might seem like a really cool idea, its not a sin and there is theology to permit it. But the headache and trouble it can potentially cause will make one regret it forever.

Only a small number of relatively small countries. Out of the heavyweights, Morocco, Algeria and Egypt are slowly bur steadily getting up while Syria and Iraq are in deep trouble
More important than universities are the many professional schools which got established in the past half-century and are as in Europe the main pillar of education. The one which owns money, Saudi Arabia, is investing billions in its infrastructure and into education in order to get ahead.
You have to see that in the 1950ies, illiteracy rates between Casablanca and Muscat were between 30 and 70 percent (Syria fairly good with less than 25% but the KSA pretty bad with around 60 to 70 percent). So that the Arab World as first priority had to catch up

Even I have to give credit to the Israeli Police and courts for finding and prosecuting the perpetrators of this heinous crime.
