Forget about S.A which has its own problems, what about our own governments? So far all we've heard from Brown and Bush is weasle words. Contrast that with the stirring hyperbole and speed in which they managed to unseat Saddam Hussein; A far more formidable dictator than Mugabe.

So true,Castro..if the Brits and Americans could get rid of Mr Hussein, surely Mr Mugabe would be a piece of cake for them to get rid
of..I guess their priorities don't lie in Africa..the most beautiful, most
complicated continent.

Re: Zimbabwe: I hope this is true....Mugabe defeated

Here's an interesting article about Mugabes' chances of retaining his iron grip on power now that Zanu PF has lost their majority. I hope that this is true, now that it seems they were able to rig the elections just enough for a run-off.

What a tosser, he could have taken retirement ten years ago and been remembered as a hero and enjoyed the billions he had probably already plundered at that time. Now the world will forever remember him as a power crazed crackpot.

Re: Zimbabwe: I hope this is true....Mugabe defeated

I am still here in SA and watch the 7 o'clock news almost every night and as you can imagine it is the leading story every night (To Eskoms delight), and it is now just a joke, people here dont even pay real attention to the story any more cos it just doesnt want to end.
I am still waiting for anyone to offer me the means and supplies to put this ding bat out of his missery??

p.s watched a live interview with Morgan (MDC) and what a well spoken, good, down to earth guy... he must be a great guy to take on that mess.

I cannot imagine how long the current regime is gonna go on.... It seems to be evident that when one comes from Zimbabwe (example of my girlfriend who has got problems with tourist visa extension today).... The immigration buro arguments its negative decision based on coming from economically and politically unprivileged nationality....

Hope one day the world will look at Zimbabwe as a land of opportunity and rich with great talents of individuals, after the current goverment stepped down....

Funnily enough I got an email from a Zimbabwean friend yesterday, he was saying that the school fees for his two children (local school) has now gone up to $20 billion and he only earns $10 billion!.

Re: Zimbabwe: I hope this is true....Mugabe defeated

Chinese arms have now arrived in Harare (allegedly with the assistance of the SA government), violence and intimidation is spiraling out of control, ex war vets turned MDC supporters are being tortured to death and Tsvangarai can't even return to Zim due to an assassination plot. I don't think Bob's giving up any time soon.

A couple of weeks ago, one of our currency database columns was changed to make it wide enough to deal with the Zimbabwean dollar exchange rate.

Re: Zimbabwe: I hope this is true....Mugabe defeated

During last couple of days there has been increased violence towards the foreigners in South Africa.

http://www.pretorianews.co.za/?fSect...5528525C541080

Those xenophobic attacks by mobs have been mainly targeted against the Zimbabwean refugees who seek the shelter in neighbouring country from regime of Mugabe.

Apparently the firearms shipped from China and with support of RSA's government have reached Zimbabwe and there is wide-spread violence, because the current president doesn't want to accept the fact that the opposition won. The MDC members have to flee away because they are prosecuted. When will all this nonsense end?

It not only distabilizes the Southern African region even further but it also does not portray good image of the country which is going to host the World Cup 2010!

Re: Zimbabwe: I hope this is true....Mugabe defeated

President Mbeki has strongly condemned the xenophobic attacks against foreigners in South Africa. The South African government does want to
stop these attacks...a great problem is that the people living in poverty
in SA blame the foreigners for taking their jobs and also for crime.I guess
the foreigners are a scapegoat. It's not easy.
As for the Chinese arms entering Zim,it's unacceptable and is also
condemned by the trade unions in SA who refused to transport the
weapons across SA.
The Chinese want to 'grab' Africa, now that Europe is no longer interested.

Europeans "not interested" ... would be obliged if you could clarify that statement.

Also, not just the Chinese, have a look at Middle East investment in various stock exchanges & also telecoms.

Africa was once worth a lot to the colonialists when they were still in power,
now that they are no longer in power, and feel that it is a continent of troubles, they invest in other parts of the world.
You are right about the Middle Eastern countries also showing an interest in
Africa,good point.

on the surface mayhap, but there are plenty of things that don't come to light, as they are not media-sexy

Quote:
The media coverage of the European Union-African summit held in Lisbon on 8-9 December 2007 was dominated by the controversy over the presence of Zimbabwe's president Robert Mugabe, and the boycott of Britain's prime minister Gordon Brown. But the real political power-game was played out on another front. As ex-colonies, the seventy-nine-strong African, Caribbean and Pacific (ACP) group of states have since the 1960s benefited from special trade agreements with the European Union. Through preferential access to its market, support for basic commodity prices and thel ike, Europe served as an instrument for post-colonial atonement.
Quote:
First, they need a "commitment technology". The region suffers from a reputation as a high policy-risk environment - an image that events such as the post-election crisis in Kenya only reinforce -so it needs credible means of signalling to the rest of the world that it is locking in its own future policies. The reciprocity requirement of EPAs can provide such an insurance. But Africa should not liberalise abruptly. Like other regions, it should plan a gradual transition of perhaps two decades during which firms could adjust production and governments could adjust revenues.
Source

with current instability, even in what have been regarded as progressive African nations, it is understandable that investment is moving to more stable regions (Central Europe / LatAm come to mind).

Also, the Chinese are belatedly playing Empire building, but instead of tanks & planes (N Korea) its engineering knowhow & vast amounts of capital.
