I'm mostly impressed by Sam Harris's restraint during the whole thing.

Re: Islamic State

Lots of ongoing debates on this topic at various IQ levels. That one was for the grade school level, and movie ticket customers. Actors and entertainers are bound to appeal by personality and their products at the cost of merit.

There are a couple of debates with much more intellectual merit. This one between Christopher Hitchens and Tariq Ramadan is much more erudite:
Christopher Hitchens and Tariq Ramadan Debate: Is Islam a Religion of Peace?

Interesting to see difference between debates in the US and UK.

This one from Oxford Union has a lot of appeal to sentiment. Mehdi Hassan pummels Peter Atkins in the end. I'd like to see Mehdi Hassan and Douglas Murray debate. Lots of emotions from both sides, as this was the day after the Rigby beheading.
Oxford Union Debate On Islam

This debate at Intelligence Squared in NYC I found very refreshing for its candor. Maajid Nawaz of Quillam and Zeba Khan debate Douglas Murray and Ayaan Hirsi Ali. Few Muslims are willing to debate Ayaan Hirsi Ali.
Is Islam is a Religion of Peace? - Intelligence Squared U.S.

I'd like to see Maajid Nawaz win a Nobel Peace Prize, because his work is worthwhile and could use support. His approach is sensible for the West, with eyes open, and not insulting to intelligence. Not at all that typical "Close your eyes! You are not seeing what you are seeing, you bigot!" platitude.

Seriously agree, after Obama. A bunch of Swedes deciding on an agenda. But it is a token of support, sometimes misplaced. Nevertheless, I'd like to see Quilliam get a boost.

I could at least understand Obama's prize, it was a mixture of European euphoria, hope and bonhomie following his election and the end of the divisive Bush era. However Henry Kissinger's prize was far more inexplicable, it was said that satire died the day he won it.

Re: Islamic State

Ben Affleck has more to lose by voicing openly his disapproval of islamophobic statements by "popular" US media figures....than any of the hidden-behind-avatar-geniuses that abund on this forum. He showed genuine courage.

As a frequent middle-eastern visitor to the US...I can only concur with this statement:
"McCarthyism may be long gone, but certain topics are sure to generate a swift response, and Hollywood's recent attempts to challenge stereotypes about the Middle East remain cautious. Most celebrities, even those who do humanitarian work in the Middle East, prefer to remain silent."

Ooooh! Celebrities afraid to speak out on glitzy chat shows about stuff that happens on another continent! My heart bleeds for them.

Meanwhile, back in the real world: http://www.spectator.co.uk/features/...f-people-here/

(and a hundred thousand other examples that will never make the front page, because they're not Ben ****ing Affleck)

He definitely seemed emotionally provoked but I won't call it courage. Courage in that case would have been to keep his calm and articulate what he wanted to say, he seemed far too agitated.

Unlike you I don't oppose Ben Affleck and sister Christine. Both are compatible forms of courage to stand-up against intolerance. The question is what are you doing? What are we doing?

Me? I'm doing **** all, because I don't have a dog in that fight. But if you expect me to show respect to some overpaid gobshite in Hollywood for having an opinion, you're having a laugh.

consistency is your issue...given that you come and post in this thread. Otherwise go and play in another sandbox if you don't have a dog in this fight.

The topic of ISIL can legitimately be described as a symptom of the problem of global modernity. So on that topic, I'm having trouble drying my clothes in my apartment....

Re: Islamic State

Those pesky opinionated people in the free world. If they would only stop with their opinions and close their eyes, it would be a perfect world. Problem? What problem?

As for tolerance, our cup overfloweth. Tolerance needs to be preached to those religious zealots, not to the West. Unless, of course, one thinks the whole reason they act up the way they do is because they are teased, humiliated and insulted:

"Yo Ahmed! Yo mama so fat God told her he had no room in heaven and the devil said there was no room in hell ."

Ludicrous
