Thanks.

I can scan the article when I get it back and send it to you if you're interested?
Thanks, but that's alright. I'm sure it will surface eventually. Apparently it is more attractive for many young muslim to be at the cusp of history than to stay home and hope for a McJob. I read reports that whatever casualties ISIS shed since the coalition airstrike was more than compensated for by new recruits from the West. It does not seem like the trend will subside until there is a better alternative to choose.

Thanks.

The NS article is written by an academic who specializes in Islamic Fundamentalism. By chance he came across a British Jihadi in Syria and gained his confidence. He managed to track down several others and gained their confidence so has some insight into their motivations, techniques, recruitment strategy etc. Of the original group of 9 he was tracking, only two survive. What's interesting is that some are just motivated by boredom and gaining recognition ('are they talking about me at home')

About " Of the original group of 9 he was tracking, only two survive. "

I was just thinking about this topic yesterday; every time I read numbers for foreign ISIS volunteers the death rate (%ge) is very high.
I do not know if they put the foreigners exclusively on the front line (like first world war strategy) or if the death rate is high for all ISIS members.
Makes the ISIS propaganda about "invulnerability" look quite sick?

When did they claim to be invulnerable? They go there ready to die. It's their cause that they say is invincible.

Possibly; in UK before both the first and second world wars young men were very enthusiastic about joining the army.
After a while people noticed that many young men were not returning home and those who were returning home were missing parts. Then the enthusiasm started to fade away!
Then they had to start campaigns where young ladies gave white flowers or similar to young men not in uniform - to try to shame them to join up.

All the time; that is the main reason the Iraq army ran away!

You are mixing up the ISIS propaganda put out by the "management" to frighten their enemies with the personal motivation of their volunteers.

This is why they cannot afford to lose the fight for Kobane; this will be a significant blow to their "invulnerability".

This is an IS recruitment tactic too

I don't think its the same motive. Many legitimate research polls find that a large number (30%) of British Muslims don't even consider the UK home. Going to this region to fight is their homecoming. Pew, Gallup, ICM and other research polls tell a clearer story of what is going on.

You're mixing a marketing motive with a religious and deeply personal motive.

You need to look up Pakistan and Bangladesh in an atlas.

Not their geographic home, their spiritual home - a caliphate. That is the appeal of ISIS to foreigners.

You're mixing a marketing motive with a religious and deeply personal motive.
You are missing the point.
It is the friends, relatives and family who observe the "volunteers" don't come home because they are dead. It is irrelevant whether a large number of the volunteers don't even consider the UK home - they do not come back because they are dead, although I have read that almost all the survivors do want to come back; perhaps getting shot at and doing their daily do's in a hole in the desert is not so glamorous as they thought.

About "You're mixing a marketing motive with a religious and deeply personal motive"

No
ISIS have a marketing approach that they are invincible in battle.
The volunteers want to die heroically.
These are two separate but related themes. These are facts; what is there to mix? Or do you disagree with these two themes?

I suspect a third theme that the "invisible" ISIS leaders want to become rich and powerful and certainly do not want to die

Re: Islamic State

They call it the "Next Phase", rather than the slippery slope.

IS admits Abu Bakr al Baghdadi almost got bagged:
http://www.jpost.com/Middle-East/Rep...rstrike-381274

ISIS blames their failings on their people not praying enough. Maybe they should just record their prayers, then hit Rewind-Replay all throughout the day.

Sure. Until those foreigners realize that their languages are to be given up in favour of Koranic Arabic

It's good in a sense that these people leave Switzerland to go get killed by NATO drones.

I think it's got less to do with religion and more to do with psychopaths.
