Re: Russia and NATO in the News

Speaking of old and irrelevant stories....Russia is now suddenly suggesting a UN tribunal be set up for the US bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1945 (??) Something that happened 70 years ago, that the US doesn't deny, and that Russia wasn't even involved with. Considering that Japan today is a close US ally and 75% of Japanese have an unfavorable opinion of Russia makes it even more bizarre.

Quote:
An international tribunal should be set up to investigate the US atomic bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1945, according to Sergey Naryshkin, speaker of Russia's Duma, or lower house of parliament, Russian state news agency Itar-Tass reports.

He added that if those responsible for the bombings were not punished "there could be very, very serious consequences."
http://europe.newsweek.com/russian-p...ombings-331282

Altho if you consider that last weeks UN tribunal proposal by Malaysia was vetoed by Russia, which made them look bad, I guess it makes sense that Russia is now trying to shift focus off themselves by raising this proposal. But doing it now, suddenly 70 years later, and without Japan's support, makes it look all the more strange and bizarre. But it seems that what Putin's Russia has become recently.

LOL, now Russia has a way to punish people in the afterlife!!

What an idiot; doesn't he know these responsible people are all long dead! The decision makers were President Harry S. Truman (died 1972) and Henry L. Stimson, the Secretary of War (died 1950).

Rumours that all is not well between Turkey and Russia
Russia/Turkey relations are bad on several fronts: the Crimean Tatars, Putin's support for Assad in Syria, even the "Turkish Stream" pipeline is now in question.. actually, all of Russia's gas deals are now in trouble...

Quote:
Recently, Russian Energy Minister Aleksandr Novak admitted that the construction of the Turkish Stream may be rescheduled.

Russia has suddenly backed away from its stated goal of ending natural gas transits across Ukraine by 2019. For months, and as recently as early June, Russian leaders and energy officials warned Europe it would have to find another way to get Russian gas, because Moscow doesn’t want to ship it through Kiev anymore.

Then Russia’s tune abruptly changed, after Putin apparently realized that there is no way the country can plan, finance, and physically build thousands of miles of pipelines needed to supplant the network already in Ukraine. Gazprom boss Alexey Miller said in late June he would reopen talks with Ukraine over future gas transit after the current contract expires.
“I can tell you that we have a direct order from the president of the Russian Federation, Vladimir Vladimirovich Putin,” Miller said, according to Reuters.

Rumours also that Russia is having a problem to find (the also rumoured) $100+ Bn cash required to build the pipeline to supply the huge China deal signed this year; also that deal is not looking so good now while the crafty Chinese linked the gas price to market prices which are down in the cellar now ($2.8 almost half the peak price).
And as mentioned in the article the Chinese may not need so much gas

About "So does America’s empire of bases in areas where it doesn’t belong – notably encircling Russia and China"

NATO has not installed any bases East of the old Iron Curtain boundary; can you name any? Even though Andre Duda, Polish president, keeps begging them to.
I do not believe China cares where NATO establishes bases?

About "Provocative military exercises near Russia’s borders" and the Russian military exercises which have 10 times as many troops and military hardware are what? The Russians have shown they are are a class ahead of NATO in shipping huge numbers of troops and hardware to important locations!

About "Lunatics in Washington intent on regime change up the stakes for possible nuclear war " Putin is the only one who boasts about nuclear weapons; can you quote one Western politician who has mentioned nuclear?

Re: Russia and NATO in the News

Russia destroyed 500 tons of "sanctioned" EU food imported into Russia last week, but it seems Italian caviar still finds a way to Putin's table

Quote:
President Vladimir Putin, in fact, is so royally pissed at the West’s continued sanctions that he recently started to destroy any Western food that does happen to cryptically arrive at the border. Just last week, the destruction of 350 tons of banned foreign food in Russia led to outrage and protests amid growing signs of food shortages.

Lelio Mondella, managing director of Agroittica, told Bloomberg Business, “We’ve had to put a Russian brand name on the tin, and we don’t put ‘Made in Italy’ on it.”

Germans are not very happy with Russian military showing off their bombs inscribed with the words "To Berlin!"

The Russian marines are also practicing amphibious landings on the Baltic coast. I'm no military expert, but I believe amphibious landings are not really "defensive" in nature, but more something used when attacking another country.

Leaders from Ex Soviet East Europe countries including Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, Bulgaria and Romania are expected to demand NATO constructs new bases in E Europe during a summit on November 3 and 4 in Bucharest.

I foresee Putin reaching for the big red button

They saw what has happened in Ukraine and do not want the same to happen to them. No doubt Russia will claim this violates the '97 agreement but they will claim Crimea was already a violation.

Rumours circulating again about a big reorganisation in the Kremlin.

I assume the people who have their noses in the corruption trough for billions are getting fed up with the effect sanctions and oil prices are having on their income. Plus I assume they have no appetite for the costs of a war.

I doubt that they will be able to reduce Putin's power and he will anyway avoid drinking tea!

Yesterday another Russian MIG-29 crashed, making that the 6th crash of a Russian Air Force jet in the last 2 months (not including the helicopter that also crashed this week).
Seven people have died after a Hawker Hunter jet crashed into several vehicles during Shoreham Airshow.
South East Coast Ambulance Service said the victims all died at the scene, with a further person being taken to hospital in critical condition.
The plane crashed on the nearby A27 in West Sussex. Fourteen people were treated for minor injuries at the scene.

The Hawker Hunter jet was developed in the 1950s and stopped being used as a military aircraft over 40 years ago.

That's not an active military jet, it was part of a historical air-show, nothing to do with NATO nor Russia

Is this a one-off change or the start of something bigger?

A little-known transport official, Deputy Transport Minister Oleg Belozerov, from Vladimir Putin's hometown will replace a demoted ally of the president, Putin confidant Vladimir Yakunin, as the head of Russian Railways, a rare shakeup in the Kremlin circle of political and economic power.
