Re: Russia and NATO in the News

USA is asking NATO members to contribute more to the budget. There're quite a few countries that pay less than 1% from GDP.

Probably should move this to the Trump related threads?

Re: Russia and NATO in the News

Quote:
Nato sources have now told The Telegraph that not only did the foiled plot appear to have been genuine, but it was directed by Russian intelligence officers with backing from Moscow. The attempted coup would have killed the then pro-West Prime Minister, Milo Djukanovic, and replaced him with a pro-Russian government, after years of warnings from the Kremlin that Montenegro should not join Nato.
The plot is being seen as one of the latest aggressive attempts by Russia to undermine the West

The Democratic Front is believed to have received millions of dollars in backing from Russia and last year ran a surprisingly slick and costly campaign during Montenegro’s parliamentary elections.
It was against this backdrop that Russia is alleged to have backed a plot led by two intelligence officers to recruit a band of Serbian nationalists and provoke the violent overthrow of the government.
In the three months since the coup was foiled, testimony from Velimirovic and another plotter-turned-prosecution witness, Aleksandar Sindjelic, have revealed the planning behind the conspiracy.
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2017...s-deadly-plot/

Seems Russia was planning a violent coup in Montengro to stop them from embracing the West...

Russian official: Information war part of ‘battle for the consciousness of the masses’

"The new propaganda and cyber-warfare division of Russia’s ministry of defence is staffed by 1,000 people and has a budget of €300 million. Special efforts are being made to target the French presidential election.

Training to storm the Reichstag building, sending three new combat divisions to the eastern border and establishing an “army for information operations”: these are the latest activities of the Russian ministry of defence."

Putin planning to send 100K troops to Baltic border for drills?

Baltic nations are increasingly worried that Russian war games set for this autumn will see President Vladimir Putin send as many as 100,000 troops to Belarus’ border with Lithuania and Poland -- the very edge of the Kremlin’s sphere of influence with eastern Europe.

“The Russians have ordered 83 times... the rail cars that they ordered for Zapad (in 2013),” Breedlove said at the Senate hearing. “Nations have a right to exercise,” Breedlove said on Thursday. “Nations do not have a right, I think, to exercise irresponsibly on other borders and in configurations that represent offensive capability.”

“We are worried about the upcoming ‘Zapad 2017’ exercise, which will deploy a very large and aggressive force (on our borders) that will very demonstrably be preparing for a war with the West,” Grybauskaite said in Riga, according to a transcript of her statements by the Reuters news agency.

No NATO member other than the USA has a worldwide presence and is more often at war than not. It's disingenuous, at best, to compare US spending levels to the other's. Come back once the numbers have been corrected for their worldwide military bases, wars they're involved in, and other political and military actions.

The Reichstag has been gone for more than 70 years. One can only hope this doesn't reflect their general level of accuracy.

Re: Russia and NATO in the News

Alexei Navalny, Russian opposition leader, has been arrested as have hundreds of others at multiple anti corruption rallies across Russia. Rallies were claimed to be well attended despite police bans.

This level of protest is unusual as Putin usually keeps a tight control on people trying to protest.
Quote:
After months spent probing the network, the Anti-Corruption Foundation, headed by opposition activist Alexei Navalny, has released on line a video and documentation it says show that Mr. Medvedev has accumulated more than $1 billion worth of property, including vast estates in Russia and Tuscany and two yachts.
Impressive on his salary!
Video includes scenes inside his estates shot by drones.

Putin's spokesman warns against attempts to hold unauthorized rallies in Moscow

Earlier, representatives of the Open Russia political movement founded by exiled Russian businessman Mikhail Khodorkovsky announced plans to hold a 10,000-strong rally on Saturday

MOSCOW, April 27. /TASS/. Any attempts to hold unauthorized rallies in Moscow on April 29 will bring about a legal response of the authorities, Kremlin Spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on Thursday.

"We know that indeed there are some persons who again call to take illegal steps when Moscow showed readiness to provide a possibility to gather in a legal way and hold some events," Peskov said.
Quote:
Russian authorities banned the independent political movement "Open Russia" Wednesday as an "undesirable organization" three days before its nationwide "Enough!" rallies aimed at opposing any re-election bid by President Vladimir Putin in 2018.

Khodorkovsky told TV Dozhd that the ruling by the prosecutor general was "no doubt" connected to Saturday's planned demonstrations.

"Our plans have not changed at all," he said. "Quite the opposite; I think that such a terrified reaction from the government will only motivate more people to come out in to the streets and tell those in power that if they can not run the country properly and solve the issues that face Russian society, then they should leave.”

More anti-Putin protests planned for this weekend. Are Russian's finally waking up and realizing that Putin is not "Making Russia Great Again" but leading them into poverty and isolation? Hmmm, let's see... who knows, maybe Russians like Putin, poverty and isolation

That would be awesome.
Except if they vote for someone even more nationalistic and imperialistic.

Who thinks the Russians are mature enough to vote for some normal politician?

I don't know and I don't want to assume. But if they will vote with Putin's clones it is not because of "Russian people are less mature than others"..it's just the fact that certain circles will never let the power get out of their hands. They will put in function the huge propaganda machine which will demolish every credible candidate who is not affiliated to them imho.

Could somebody, somebody, please, please, comment on my post above? I think the US has the same claim to the democracy today as Switzerland did in 1970. For different reasons though.
