Can you pass this test? No one else can

http://www.openculture.com/2014/11/h...racy-test.html

"This summer, we revisited a literacy test from the Jim Crow South. Given predominantly to African-Americans living in Louisiana in 1964, the test consisted of 30 ambiguous questions to be answered in 10 minutes. One wrong answer, and the test-taker was denied the right to vote. It was all part of the South’s attempt to impede free and fair elections, and ensure that African-Americans had no access to politics or mechanisms of power."

The test is nasty yet fascinating, the questions are ambiguous and so far no one has got all questions right.

Re: Can you pass this test? No one else can

One can argue that there can not be unambiguous answers if the questions are ambiguous. Just because somebody has the authority to claim that a given set of answers are right does not mean they are as such. It's the classic "objective truth vs. subjective truth" issue. The answers are true in the mind of the authority giving the test, and being the authority, they are unable to even imagine another truthful interpretation of the questions. They are mixing up belief and knowledge. A classic.

Short version: it's an abuse of authority to claim to have the answers in the first place. There is no objective measure as to how one could succeed or fail the test anyway.

Interesting that even Harvard students who are used to tests couldn't pass. That's what I call a fixed exam

The questions aren't ambiguous at all.

Yes, I can pass the test.

Well, assuming any of this is real, my respect for Harvard just dropped. The test is a waste of time yes, but hardly difficult. Just follow the directions...

Although by no means difficult for the average person it's not difficult to believe they could have been quite confusing for someone with very little education. (which actually was the purpose of it)

I'm not sure I agree that the average person would get them all right. I certainly didn't. There's enough ambiguity in the questions to derail anyone.

Re: Can you pass this test? No one else can

First of all, I question whether or not this is actually a test given under the circumstances provided. The North US ( especially elitist universities) are/is notorious for compromising facts to suit their agenda of US South bias. The South US, was responsible for the majority of slavery in the history of the US and is continually portrayed as racist, dumb bumpkins, trailer trash by the the North constituency.
The tests given at this time were meant to eliminate the possibility of Africian American voting. However , this test seems much too nonstandard, poor spacing , preparation, etc to seem an offical state or federal test. We are talking 1960's. Not 1760's. My history notes that the testing material was dedicated to questions pertaining to US history, it's constitution , bill of rights, etc - not ambiguous trivia.
It might seem a mute point since the actual test(s) were near impossible to pass, but some did. I do not condone the use of this or any other method to unjustly restrict a citizen from voting, however druding up a fictional test is possibly another way to not merely re deliver the message of the US's unjust , brutal past , but also (maybe primarily) to once again engage in superiority baiting and poking the eye of the U.S. South.
An agenda is present and it may not be advertised .

Re: Can you pass this test? No one else can

If you take the questions literally, it's relatively simple. I got all them all right -- at least, the 19 answers that were provided in the answer key. What about the solutions to the other 11?

The point of the test, of course, is that the authorities could choose to interpret a question differently to the test-taker, thereby invalidating their response. For example:

2. Draw a line under the last word in this line.

Here's one answer:

Draw a line under the last word in this line.

and here's another:

Draw a line under the last word in this line.

Sorry, sir, you can't vote today.

By the way, in the usual interpretation of things, the answer given in the answer key for question 29 would be incorrect. "Every other" word should start with the second word. But of course, that's another example of selective interpretation.

Whether genuine or not (and my money's on not), the test should be seen today, in 2014, as just a bit of fun, although literacy and numeracy are very important topics, even today. Don't you agree?

1960s, 1760s, its, moot, dredging.

Well, I think maybe I could, with perhaps exception to numnber 29 but how would I know? The test is not interactive! Or is the key somewhere. I havent found it? The test is indeed crap, especially number 29 which frankly looks like someone dictated it after 2 hours' smoking weed

Haha, thanks! I had scrolled past the text just to look at the test!

I wonder if I would have gotten the cross one wrong as I would draw a cross like an X, not a plus... also the million question is wrong in the key! They have crossed out 4 zero's making 1,000,000 which is one million, not BELOW one million! Lol what a ridiculous test

Also number 16 I would have gotten right, but to make the question more legible they ought to have used parantheses
