French outrage at Eurovision entry containing English

A French MP has said he is outraged that the song chosen to represent the nation in the Eurovision song contest has English lyrics.
Jacques Myard, of the UMP party, has urged the company that runs most of France's TV networks to reconsider. Sebastien Tellier's entry, entitled Divine, combines both English and French lyrics with electro music.

I agree with him! I think that each entry must be in the on of the official languages of the country... Although, having said that one of my favorite EuroVison songs was the Belgian entry that was sung in a made up language!

I know... I speak a little... (ok, one sentence)...
But it REALLY was a made up language!

Good, make me search the internet for Eurovision trivia... And it's such a beautiful day out...... Thanks!

EDIT: News Flash.. This year's entry may also be in a made up language.... more news in a moment!

EDIT again: Ok here is the article for the 2008 Belgian entry in a made up language referencing the 2003 entry by Sanomi also in a made up language:

Wphew... Now I can go outside and enjoy the sun!

Who cares? Some people obsess over language more than things that should really matter in life.

Nice glasses (is this the guy?)

Re: French outrage at Eurovision entry containing English

It won't help the French anyway. Only Belgium and LuxembourgSinging in English didn't help the UK last year. They got lots of null points. Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Iceland and Finland will vote for each other and no-one has a chance against the Croatia, Macedonia, Serbia, Montenegro, Slovenia, Bulgaria, Bosnia Herzegovina block or the ex soviet block who likewise vote in each others favour no matter how horrible the contribution. It was a farce last year. Time to end the regional panels or better still the whole stupid charade. A series of one day cricket matches would be more entertaining.

Re: French outrage at Eurovision entry containing English

Sanomi is one of my favourite entries from the past few years too. Add to that last year's Georgian entry, among a few others.

Back to France, with language issues aside, I think it's a great song, and might get my SMS vote (we can do that here, right?) I should vote for my home entry (see, it's all on the merit of the music) though there is no guarantee we'll make it to the grand final, as you may see from below

Which is actually why I think they should all sing in their own language. Right now, it's all the same pop-y fake rock stuff sung in English. If they had to sing in their own language the song would have to really good to stand out. I think.

Anyway, I don't really care... It's just (mostly) amusingly terrible!

It's viral marketing for the French entry and I'll have no part of it...

On the other hand if the Norwegians can win with a bunch of Klingons singing in English then I guess it's okay for the French to camp it up with a bit of franglais.

Indeed, its all about tactical voting which is why we got stuffed around the time of the Iraq war.

Re: French outrage at Eurovision entry containing English

Will there be anywhere in Zurich showing it (the BBC broadcast, of course) on a big screen?

I'd love to organise a Eurovision party, but I'd only fit about four of you in my television room...
