And that is something I am happy to see, because incitement to violence or ridicule has no place in a civilised society.
Not sure about the incitement to ridicule, though.

How many of you have ever seen or read Charlie Hebdo? I use to buy it as a teen and occasionaly as an adult. These guys are some of the funniest satirists around, or were till this morning. This isn't just another senseless gun shooting, it's the beginning of something more. Expect serious complications for the presence of Islam in Europe.

Oh and the accents have been identified as Franco-Algerian ghetto style (cf C Dans L'Air, on france5.fr).

according to Olygirl's logic - very few. The caricature mocked ISIS which, she assures us, is a tiny minority.

Castro - Holocaust denying is a lie, and as such it is rightly banned. and it also usually done by people who think a Holocaust is a good thing.

And the winner is !! envelop please , Pashosh Clap clap clap

I doubt that. Publicly, politicians will get in front of the camera and pour some reassuring statements about resolve, European values and justice. The police will run around as if they are doing something important, but are actually helpless and clueless. They'll hold Cobra meetings and come out with a statement about some task force, or new bill. All to give you the impression that they have some control of the situation when they do not, because they need to justify all the massive amounts of tax money spent on their existence, and keep people from panicking. And as all the shock and discomfort is anaestheicized a few days later, then the talking points will be, "It had nothing to do with Islam". Then liberals and the media will call for the need for self-censorship.

Latest update: the french police RAID (SWAT) is surrounding a building in the area of Croix-Rouge in Reims. Helicopters are circling (source AFP).

EDIT: apparently the police found one ID card of the youngest suspect in the abandoned car which led to locate them in Reims. Gunfires reported in Reims now.

"Hey! We avenged the Prophet Muhammad! We killed Charlie Hebdo," one of the men shouted in French, according to a video shot from a nearby building and broadcast on French TV. Other video showed two gunmen in black at a crossroads who appeared to fire down one of the streets. A cry of "Allahu akbar!" — Arabic for "God is great"— could be heard among the gunshots.

from:
http://news.yahoo.com/police-11-dead...113741279.html

Pending them being caught, draw your own PC conclusions

Link to a video of the "gunmen" with fairly clear audio

In France you usually speak and shout in French. And the Phrase we avenged the Prophet Mohammed is well known, as is the Statement "God is greater" Allah-u-Akbar --- and so, your evidence does not prove anything.

The names and photos of the 3 suspects are circulating now on Internet and some online news sites like Huffingtonpost.fr

The profile of the suspects:
- french-algerian citizenship
- 2 brothers, 32 and 34 years old living in Pantin.
- 1 young student 18years old from Reims area
- the oldest man was in Syria and came back during the summer
- suspects known by french police for other criminal activities

Whatever, I am impressed. Looks as if the French Gendarmerie has improved

1) the caricature mocked ISIS and radical Islam. currently the world's most eligble targets for mocking.

2-4) Freedom of speech is there to be used. If someone is offended, it's their problem. As long as the speech is not racist or violent it should be allowed.

Alright, let's go to TEL AVIV and you show me a paper where we can walk into major rooms and attack the top brass --- a free coffee for you

Re: A shooting just happened in ( *fill in the blank * )

I just wanted to mention that most of my earlier posts here were based on my (apparently incorrect) assumption that this magazine had been primarily targeting Muslims in general (rather than jihadists). Thanks in part to Amaraya's post, I realize now that these cartoons were not simply poking fun at Islam in general, but the satire was more aimed at the radical extremists. (Though someone please correct me if I'm wrong here). Unfortunately, I am not fluent in French (I wish!), so I am not able to really understand the cartoon(s).

Yes, they were primarily poking fun at Islamic extremists. My French isn't great either, but it's clear from the pictures...

Re: A shooting just happened in ( *fill in the blank * )

The youngest suspect has handed himself in and there have been arrests ( of family and friends) in relation to the other two (main) suspects.

I used to occasionally but the magazine many years ago and it was essentially poking fun at any kinds out extremes and not only religious ones. The Brits were a big target for them at one time.
They worked with things that were topical at the time so given that Islamic state is in the news on a daily basis it's not surprising that their more recent editions involve Islamic extremists in some way.

It absolutely doesnt qualify as a mitigating factor for the attackers even if they had targeted Islamic extremists in particular.

If they had made only Islam a target, as a secular republic, France has laws on the books to deal with that kind of nastiness, and the civilized response would be to sue them, not with AK-47s.

Don't cover ignorance by excuses!
Next time seek information prior to spread sh1te!

Anyway, with a very tiny amount of research or even some basic understanding, you would have noticed that they were doing caricatures. That's all- No specific target to muslims, disabled, or green birds.

So in some way, momentarily, you have adopted the same ignorant behavior as the one "offended" by the cartoons. Not well done.

And even if they were poking fun at militant Islam and nothing else, what's the big deal?

There are also people poking fun at homeopathists and (or so I have heard) there exists a certain forum where the legends pick fun at newbies who make 120K and can't get brown sugar.

Just because a certain group has a track record of getting angry and killing poeple, should the law prevent people from criticising them?
