How many EF members had actually read Charlie Hebdo before this week?

A quick poll, for curiosity's sake.

Re: How many EF members had actually read Charlie Hebdo before this week?

I've not read it (limited French you see) but know the cartoons well (they stand up on their own without the rest of the text). But I also look at the cartoons in Private Eye, or the Spectator or any other journal with a satirical slant to it (which one can also appreciate without reading tiresome rants by Taki etc.

Re: How many EF members had actually read Charlie Hebdo before this week?

I read it quite a bit when we were living in France but I went for option three as I don't think either of the first two options truly reflect my views.
It could have been either one of those depending on which edition it was and the subject matter at that time so I went for the no opinion either way option.

I had never heard of it, either. But I'll admit that now that I do know what it is and have seen some of the cartoons, I'm not fond of it.

I get my kicks from Private Eye, they attack everyone that steps out of line. http://www.private-eye.co.uk/current_issue.php?

Re: How many EF members had actually read Charlie Hebdo before this week?

As usual, a poll with tick answers that do not fit for me. Been reading Harakiri, its predecessor since the 60s- and Charlier Hebdo on and off since the beginning. I found it neither interesting nor dreadful- just not my cup of tea and too often gratuitous. Don't mind when they attack politicians and governments- but too often their attacks were just nasty for the sake of being nasty- and racist- which they purport not to be.

I've read it a couple of times.

That's what I thought. Pretty puerile really. But then, French humour is rather different from English humour.

Re: How many EF members had actually read Charlie Hebdo before this week?

I've never heard of it but I'm considering making an avatar to make it seem like I've been a long-time reader and a thought-provoking cartoonist myself.

I wish my village would have a vigil so I could show up and look like a caring person. Maybe my photo would make it in the newspaper? Maybe the friends and family of those who lost their lives would see my photo and think, "Hey, I really appreciate this guy caring. I'm a little bit less sad now. I think the world is going to get better now."

If you mean me - I've got a great interest in cartoons. Above my desk I have a framed cartoon from a 1954 Punch magazine. I've got books about the history of cartoons.

I even draw cartoons. I've never had any published though. Perhaps I ought to try again as their are now several vacancies?

No, poor French understanding and also fail on French culture.

Culture is probably the same reason I mostly do not understand Doonesbury.

Actually I hadn't noticed your avatar changing.

What the f*** does "je suis Charlie" even mean? I had to google translate it after a couple of days. I guess it just surprises me that so many people actually care enough about free speech to get together with a bunch of other "like-minded" folks and hold up these placards in the town squares. Free speech is great and all (in concept) but I don't spend much time thinking or giving a damn about it. I guess I'm in the minority. Also, the cynic in me makes me think that a good portion of these people aren't that genuine in their beliefs. I remember friends of mine that used to hang out at the anti-war protests just because there were a lot of cute hippy chicks there.

Am I the only one that thinks there is something attractive about that missing terrorist girl?

My french is too bad to make sense of most articles in French newspapers.
Even more so for newspapers with satirical content und context...

What the f*** does "je suis Charlie"
Does "I am Spartacus" ring any bells?
Although I concede that no one is putting themselves in the same danger as the cartoonists.

I'd not heard of it, and I'm unlikely to ever read it.

In much the same way as I wouldn't be rushing out to buy Hello magazine if a bunch of their employees got shot.
