Yeah, you clearly aren't familiar with what happened at Hillsborough. I wouldn't use that as justification, seeing as how the police were to blame.

I cant see any reason to bring Hillsborough into this. can you explain?
I imagine you think those pens at football grounds were required because attending a football match in the 70s and 80s was the same as taking part in a Teddy Bear's picnic.

Ah, so the fact that those pens were there, that was the cause of 96 people dying, and not because the police herded them into a space clearly too small for them?

The pens were there to segregate, not to imprison and crush. Know the facts before you comment so loosely on something that killed 96 people.

I'll comment on what I want to comment on. Those pens were there because football fans behaved like animals, therefore they were caged like animals.

No one has yet been blamed for the Hillsborough disaster as the inquiry is still ongoing. Perhaps you should check your facts.

Never mind. The Guardian article answered my question as to why the Chelsea fans were in Paris.

In his previous post he said INDIRECTLY, Jesus, learn to read before going off at the deep end.

They did indirectly contribute to the deaths of 96 people, as if they hadn't been there, they could have just spilled out onto the pitch.
The direct cause, as currently being investigated/proved is the police's poor crowd handling.

People screaming at the first mention of Hillsborough, or racism, or whatever else stifle sensible, measured debate on topics...we are a forum of mostly intelligent people, not the letters page of a tabloid.

When you think how commonplace fences were in the 80's it's so lucky they weren't in place at the front of the Paddock at Bradford City in 1985. The death toll would have been in the hundreds.

I understand what you're saying, J2488, but the cages were a major contributing factor at Hillsborough and they were there as a result of violence in football grounds.

It was bad enough as it was at Valley Parade on that day god knows what it would have been like if they'd had fences up. That was the last football match I ever went to in a proper stadium.

Football hooliganism was a massive problem back then and the fences were seen seen as a way to overcome that. Obviously in the wake of the Hillsborough tragedy they were removed but nobody had foreseen the potential dangers.
Hindsight is a wonderful thing.

Hooliganism and football related violence is probably equally as big a problem nowadays just in a different way. It's much more racially motivated nowadays.

Crikey, way to blame 500m people by the actions of 10 BNP scumbags.

That's like saying the whole of the USA is stuck in the 1780s because some gun nut shoots up a school.
Not really, as I implied "at times".

Also, this is not an isolated incident in European sports. I know of several instances, where soccer and hockey players were taunted with bananas and monkey chants.

no, it's like saying the whole of the USA is stuck in the 1780s because it still forces its black communities to live in de-facto reservations which are referred to in code as "Urban Centers". if we're going to pull in an entirely different country halfway across the world on the basis of some irrelevant analogy, let's at least keep with the theme.

It's examples like this that make me ashamed to be English. I say "English" specifically, as it never seems to be Scottish, Welsh or Irish fans being so moronic.

It's no wonder the rest of Europe dislikes "Brits Abroad", as this is their only reference point.
My thoughts exactly. I cringe to think what people think of "Brits Abroad" ….. maybe you should have to take an intelligence test before you are issued with a passport!!!

Re: Chelsea fans in Paris Metro racist incident.

Three of the suspects have been identified and Chelsea Football Club have already suspended them from home games while investigations continue. I read one report with a comment from another Chelsea fan on the train who said (unbelievably) that the other fans pushed him off because he was a Paris SG fan, not because he was black! (sorry, can't find the article now)

A nice interview with the victim here on the beeb confirming that he will make a police complaint, hopefully resulting in these idiots being charged in France.

Re: Chelsea fans in Paris Metro racist incident.

The Guardian has named 2 brothers as being suspects who have been suspended by Chelsea and rather gleefully post a photo of him with Nigel Farage (although UKIP have been very fast in condemning this incident).

One of the brothers, Josh Parsons, has also been suspended from his job at Business and Commercial Finance Club pending an investigation by them.

And the Guardian also re published part of the interview with another so called fan on the train....

"Mitchell McCoy, a 17-year-old Chelsea fan who was also on the train, has spoken to a number of media outlets defending the fans in the video, claiming there was no racism involved.
He told LBC: “The carriage was full up, there was no room for him to get on and he tried to force himself on. He was really aggressive, pushing himself. I’d say it was self defence, pushing him off.”
Asked whether the pushing and chanting were connected, he said: “No of course it wasn’t connected. The press are trying to make something out of nothing.”
At the time of the incident, McCoy sent a number of tweets which he later deleted, including one which read: “Our captain is a racist a racist a racist and that is why we love him we love him we love him.”"
