More girls running off to join ISIS

Once again, we are confronted with tales of silly young girls, abandoning family, friends and all the good things a life in the West has to offer for an uncertain fate in the middle east somewhere to join an unruly bunch of men.

http://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk...-10059763.html

How could this be ? they are sacrificing so much. Their iPhone will not work out there, they'll have no TV to watch their favorite shows, no nail technicians to fiddle about with their nails and no shopping malls where they can try on dozens of different pairs shoes, etc. ? It would seem that, somehow, civilised life has failed them.

I imagine, that at that age, they start having romantic notions about marriage, starting a family etc. and this makes the whole thing even more difficult to comprehend. Out there, their choices will be limited to a few rough types, that is if they are given a choice at all. And they have no guarantee of any good treatment. Contrast that with the situation in the West with many clean cut young men, fulfilling the ideal of perfect husband.

Does it not defy understanding that they would reject the obvious choices that the West has to offer, and go looking in some far off land ? . . .

I know, right? It's almost like it's some sort of conscious rejection of all that Paris Hilton* stands for.

Re: More girls running off to join ISIS

You could equally ask why do young men go out there. Are they all violent animals too? Or are both sexes being told a pack of lies and manipulated by their own people?

Social media has a big part to play in this, as it can spread attractive messages quickly. Of course once they get there, phones and passports are confiscated and they have to graft and fight, or be tortured & killed. A very sad situation!

Re: More girls running off to join ISIS

I don't think these girls care about iphones or nails for one minute but I do think that they cannot have thought it through properly at age 15 and age 16 It's basically just gang culture for them imo. Sad that this particular gang is harder to be saved from though. So sad for their families!

I don't think there is anything uncertain about the girls fate... pretty sure they are going to be treated nicely for about a week, before being beaten, raped and then passed around the ISIS soldiers until one of them decides they want to marry them.

I guess when you've finished all the levels of Candy Crush and your Facebook friends haven't got much going on at the weekends, then headed off to Syria sounds like a great alternative.

It's obvious why they didn't take their teddy bears with them, they're made of inflammable materials and could pose a choking hazard.

For them? No, but them I'm not often full of empathy anyway. The issue is that they'll be strapped with explosives and sent into a market killing themselves (which, as I've just implied, doesn't bother me) and tens of people standing around them.

It's kind of like selling weapons which the UK and the US would of course be stupid to do. Oh, wait.

Silly Girls. I find it stupid if Boys go to IS but in case of Girls I find it difficult to understand.

I doubt they would have the brain to even carry out a suicide bombing.

Re: More girls running off to join ISIS

The girls living in the Muslim families I know, are kept on a very tight leash. Before they leave the family house they have to explain exactly where they are going, whom they will meet, and they must promise to return at the exact time. In the meantime they see their school friends going out, socializing with their friends, and having an innocent teenage life. There is bound to be a backlash, often by marrying at a very young age, just to get away from the family.

I think these girls were tempted with a chance of freedom and excitement, and getting away from their stifling families. These parents are guilty of raising teenagers in a western world in the Muslim style: it doesn't work, and it will never work. Nor will the father tempt them back with old teddy! Please show me one teenager that misses her teddy bear, as usually around 10 years of age they dump all that stuff.

But doesn't any family have some sort of rules for their children/teenagers e.g. be home no later than say 9 or 10 p.m. or phone when you're late or simply say where and with whom are you going?
I don't think they're looking for freedom there...
