Terry Pratchett RIP

http://www.bbc.com/news/entertainment-arts-31858156

Passed away aged 66 at home surrounded by family. Though his books never appealed to me, he was one of our great modern sci-fi/fantasy authors.

RIP, Terry. You fought a good fight. Now take your well deserved rest.

Terry Pratchett dies, aged 66

Never read any of his books, but was very touched by his Dimbleby lecture a few years back, about his fears about the rare form of Alzheimers that affected him, and his fight for the right to die in the UK. The Lecture was read by Toni Robinson, Baldrick of Black Adder fame- in a very moving way too.

'Glad' for him that a severe chest infection quickly saw him over the edge and spared him from the indignities of this terrible disease, and a possible trip to Dignitas. RIP.

Here is a video of the lecture:

Re: Terry Pratchett RIP

I am... well "devastated" may be too strong a word, but my feelings are heading in that direction. His work has brought me so much pleasure, that to loose him is akin to loosing a very good friend.

Not only was he a great author, but by all acounts a really nice bloke. One of my treasured possessions is a letter written and signed by him in response to a note I had sent him about a book of his. And now, once I have bought and read his last book: The Long Utopia (with Stephen Baxter, due June 2015). There will be no more Long Earth or Discworld books, ever. Nor will we see a future Tiffany Aching, would she have become another Granny Weatherwax? we'll never know.

So many much-loved characters, no more.

I suppose all I can do is to quote UU's librarian: "Oook" - which really must say it all.

Re: Terry Pratchett RIP

Devastating it is, even if I never met him... still reading the last Discworld novel and the Long Mars at the moment.. it won't be the same closing those books, knowing there really IS an end now.

Happy memories of the watch, witches and death.. his own world full of magic and humour! *

* Footnotes, don't forget the footnotes! Thank you Terry!!

Death comes to everyone. When it came to Mort it offered him a job.

RIP Pterry.

Re: Terry Pratchett RIP

GONE BUT NOT FORGOTTEN

I was looking forward to book 41.

edit: ah, it was published on Twitter today.
" AT LAST, SIR TERRY, WE MUST WALK TOGETHER "
“Terry took Death’s arm and followed him through the doors and on to the black desert under the endless night.”
"The End".

Re: Terry Pratchett RIP

He actually did a lot to highlight the effect of this terrible illness and really raised awareness by going public - a very brave man.

Re: Terry Pratchett RIP

Had a tear in my eye and a lump in my throat when I heard this, more so when I read his wife's Twitter post.

Death isn't a bad person really, just misunderstood, he only wants to help you get from here to there, and I'll bet he's taking Sir Terry first class all the way.

Re: Terry Pratchett RIP

I am - was - a huge Pratchett fan. I read all the Discworld books while on maternity leave with my daughter, holding a book with one hand, and the baby with the other.

Hope he had a witch to alleviate his pains at the end.
