GermanWings A320 Down Near Digne, French Alps

Seems a GermanWings Airbus 320 travelling from Barcelona to Dusseldorf has gone down near Digne in the French Alps.

142 passengers and 6 flight and cabin crew on board.

Oh no.

Thinking of all those on board, I know it is unlikely but I hope there are survivors.

That feels very close to home, both geographically and the fact that I've flown Germanwings several times in the last few years.

RIP to all on board.

Even closer to home when you realise that particular aircraft flew out of Zürich twice last week.

That's some pretty awful terrain for any rescue/recovery mission.

Re: German Wings A320 down over France

It's a sad news and it really feels like it has touched us all directly or indirectly. My heart goes to all family members of all these unfortunate people who were on the board of the plane.

You are probably right that none of the people on board will survive but miracles do happen. Let's not predict too early.

I've driven through that way a couple of times when the main roads were blocked - it is pretty remote.

The fact that there are no on-the-ground visuals reported yet is because of it's remoteness.

You've still got to be able to put it down which requires a relatively flat surface of enough area, and there's a limit to the amount of people and supplies they can carry.

Re: GermanWings A320 Down Near Digne, French Alps

At times like this I tend not to think about the victims themselves but rather how awful it must have been to be sat on that plane in its last few minutes. Most aeroplane crashes occur during take off and landing not during mid flight. 30000 feet that plane went down in only 10 minutes, which meant those passengers had to sit there knowing the inevitable was coming.

Just imagine you're being sat there getting stuck into your latest Jack Reacher novel with a cup of awful coffee and the next moment you're on a non stop ticket to the afterlife. Absolutely terrifying.

Re: GermanWings A320 Down Near Digne, French Alps

As a very frequent traveler, taking +a flight every single week, weeks on which I take 4 flights, I am SHOCKED.... About to cry.

RIP all on board, and my deepest condolences to all their families.

Is it possible that with the speed the plane was going down it could affect the pressure and everyone was unconscious?

I really hope so.
