US has "no plans" to evacuate Americans from Yemen

BBC is reporting that the US has "no current plans" to evacuate Americans from Yemen, while countries such as France, China, Pakistan, Sudan and Algeria have been evacuating their citizens there. Relevant section of BBC report starts at 1:20:

http://www.bbc.com/news/world-middle-east-32193587

Just why do Americans abroad pay taxes to the US when the US government can't even evacuate its citizens from a collapsing country?

I suspect that any American who chose to live in Yemen anytime in the last 20 years had a pretty good idea of the risks they were taking.

yes, not wanting to be a westerner in Yemen is hardly a 21st century thing.

The Obama administration never misses an opportunity to make the Russians and Chinese look good:

"Canadians taken out of Yemen with help of Kremlin, Russian media says
2 planes reportedly brought 284 people to Moscow including Canadian and Polish citizens"

http://www.cbc.ca/news/world/canadia...says-1.3021424

"China-led evacuation from war-torn Yemen said to include Canadians
Said to be 1st time China helps evacuate foreign nationals during international crisis"

Re: US has "no plans" to evacuate Americans from Yemen

^^ I think it was meant that in the past the US usually took the leading role evacuating people in crisis situations. But since Obama has pulled back from the role of "global policeman", other countries with large military/logistic structures like China and Russia will now step up to fill the void.... up to and including evacuating US citizens from crisis areas.

Re: US has "no plans" to evacuate Americans from Yemen

Russians have brought the fifth plane from Yemen carrying people of different nationalities, with a lot of news coverage -- and rightly so. I don't understand why the US is not doing the same. They have the infrastructure, the US citizens are in danger, there is a need for help, and they could get some nice PR news coverage out of it. Sure the foreign people living in Yemen were probably aware of the risks, but so what? So are skiers, alpinists, hikers, climbers, sailors etc who know about dangers of their activities but still expect to be rescued if needed. Some people even think that providing help to them in difficult situations abroad is their governments responsibility of some sort.

There's a bit of a difference between a skier or a climber and a "security adviser".

The Americans in Yemen know exactly what they're doing there, and so does their government.

The russian news show a lot of interviews with rescued Russians from Yemen -- doctors, workers, nurses, wifes with children. Are there any Americans like that who need to get out of Yemen?

I doubt there are even any Russians like that in Yemen, let alone American "doctors, workers, nurses"...

Do you really believe the shite you watch on RT?

From rt.com story on "Escape from Yemen: Refugees tell RT 'the whole city was shaking'":
"Uzbek citizen Nurlus Salamov, who worked in Yemen as an anesthesiologist for seven years, told RT that working was now impossible."
"Russian gynecologist Tatiana had worked in Yemen for 10 years and was reluctant to evacuate."
http://rt.com/news/247309-yemen-evac...russian-plane/

The Russian plane in the video looks like an Ilyushin Il-62 - discontinued years ago. It wouldn't make sense to send a new plane into a war zone.

Doubtful, as one would have to be (pc mode on) lacking in mental capacity (pc mode off) to work in such a place.

Current plans are posted here...

http://yemen.usembassy.gov/

I seem to recall the Canadian Embassy in Iran back in the 70's going above and beyond the call to hide and ultimately successfully evacuate some trapped American citizens for which the Canadian diplomats never really got full credit.

A few years back the Canadian government evacuated a large number of Canadian/Lebanese citizens from Beirut at great expense to all CDN tax payers. This lead to a huge debate in Canadian society about the true costs of duel citizenship. Unlike the US laws, in Canada many can simply take on a Canadian passport as a flag of convenience and never spend much time in Canada and don't have to pay taxes to Canada.
