It is a catrastrophic natural disaster in another country, far away from Europe, and events like it have been happening since time immemorial. Yes, it is a humanitarian crisis and I hope aid reaches these people as soon as possible... but other than feeling a pang of sympathy for as long as I read the article it does not affect me in any way, shape or form. I don't mean to be harsh or uncaring, but it's just reality for many people.

If I was from the region of the world, or had family there, then yes of course it would be different. I guess the same goes for many other "privileged caucasian" EF'ers too.

Its strange for me how Angelina's breast gets much more sympathy than few thousands dead. Some people can at least say kind words which does not cost anything…..

I think it's because it was an earthquake, and people get killed in earthquakes all the time. And people will go on getting killed by earthquakes for many years to come. One can't blame anyone and one can't prevent them. It just happens. This particualar one happened in a country on the other side of the world where many people have never been nor will ever go and therefore can't relate to it. Hence the collective shrug that meets this news. It's not a lack of sympathy, it's just the way many humans are.

Stark contrast in attitude to the Indian rape case...? Maybe it's because dealing with this one (Nepal Quake) does not present opportunities for preening and pontification? Western hypocricy at its best!!! BRAVO!!!

Absolutely heartbreaking.
My sister and husband lived in Kathmandu some years ago and said they regularly felt tremors.

Anyone wishing to help can donate here..

Dear Fellow white / caucasian EFers,

I have read some pretty crass and in humane comments on my thread re the Nepal Quake. The attitude is "It's too far... It happenss...What do I care"

Well, you are welcome to this approach. Alternatively, you can make an effort - gargantuan in case of some members - and do your two bits for humanity.

Please contribute to the INDIAN PRIME MINISTERS RELIEF FUND.

India is at the forefront of trhe rescue efforts at pressent, a fact which you are welcome to check independently.

Many of us white/Caucasian EF'ers do care, and try to help as best we can.

You can also donate here..

Well, they could always do what the Italians did after the Acquila quake and arrest a bunch of scientists and try them for not predicting the quake (though they were acquitted on appeal).

I also sense a certain contempt for poorer countries on some EF threads, but bit of a stretch with the white / caucasian members bit. I would not assume either way if a colored EF member would care or not about victims of this quake.

Are you sure this goes to to help Nepal?

On the page you linked to - "PMNRF provides relief only to the citizens of India. Hence contributions wherein the donor mention that the amount is meant for the foreign citizens/calamities abroad, are not accepted in the Fund."

The link to donate to the Red Cross specifically for this earthquake is here

The Prime Minister has the prerogative to announce ex-gratia payments for any cause.

In any case, the point i'm making is please help also once in a while, along with the all too frequent preaching. I'm not being biased, look at the Indian Mars Mission Thread, The Indian Rape thread.. and you'll realize what i'm saying is true to an 'uncomfortably' large extent.
