True, the standard situation for Putin is he does what he likes and then when he gets push back he starts threatening and waving the nuclear weapons flag.

Problem for him with this approach is this situation is out of the box; the target is too dispersed and any way hopes to go to heaven after violent death so probably welcomes the nuclear holocaust?!

Wonder what his plan B will be? He is keeping a low profile at the moment, probably waiting to see which way events will turn before he spins his response?

Re: Russian airliner missing over Egypt's Sinai peninsula

In EU, living standards are high and politicians avoid war at almost all costs, so when Putin comes along and gives Ukraine a bloody nose, nobody wants to get involved.

The ME is a much rougher neighborhood, Putin is quickly finding out. Totally different ballgame. Putin would be smart to cut his losses and back out of there, but that would dent his macho image, so let's see how he plays his hand...

I have heard very bellicose anti-Russian statements coming from Polish, Lithuanian, Lettish, Estonian and Romanian governments.

Maybe they had their reasons?

Who defends the interests of ethnic Ukrainians?
Currently around 2 million Ukrainian refugees and around 9,000 deaths so a number of refugees in total equal to about half the size of the population of the Donetsk Oblastb have fled.

Around three quarters of a million of these Ukrainian refugees fled to Russia so I assume these are the ones you refer to when you write "Putin comes along in defence of the interests of ethnic Russians". So now they are in another country and in the course of this exodus they lost their homes and most of their possessions. They must be really happy with Putin's defence of their interests?
I hope Putin never comes around to defend my interests

Re: Russian airliner missing over Egypt's Sinai peninsula

Egypt mismanaged Sinai and is now paying for it. Instead of giving the Beduins a stake in Sinai's success, it alieneted them, didn't act against weapon and people smuggling - now these weapons are used against Egyptian soldiers and foreign tourists.

Sinai was a great place. hopefully it will be so again soon.

Why would he come around to defend your interests You live in Switzerland, a free, democratic and sovereign country, and we will NEVER join the EU juggernaut or let them decide for us, as these would mean betraying everything our ancestors fought for

Russian aviation authorities have taken the rational and non-political decision of suspending Boeing's certificates in Russia (because apparently they may explode if a bomb is on-board (?)) Perhaps a shift to Russian built aircraft for Russian airlines is in the cards?
Apparently Transaero airlines, Russia's second-biggest carrier is on the verge of bankruptcy. Transaero has been fighting for its survival for months, as a weakened rouble and sliding disposable incomes in Russia (mostly due to Western sanctions and sliding oil prices) have forced people to cut down on overseas travel.

There is a rumour that the decision to suspend Boeing's certificates in Russia was pushed by the chairwoman of the Russian aviation authorities committee.
More to the rumour is that Tatiana Anodina, the committee’s chairwoman — and mother of Transaero’s founder and largest shareholder, Alexander Pleshakov — had targeted the Boeings in a ploy to avert the airline’s bankruptcy.

Anyway at a meeting called on Friday by Rosaviatsia, the domestic airline regulator that would be required to give the actual suspension order, it was determined that the demand to suspend Boeing's certificates had no merit.

Consequently it looks like Transaero can not be saved.

if the Egypt tourist business also collapses then more Russian airlines are likely to run out of money

Stopping countries pumping ever more money into loss making businesses will save those countries ; not destroy them.

There's already a thread for bickering about Russia. Please take it there (or preferably don't).

Well, the Russians have done it in the past.

Infact, there's a memorial at the Devli's Bridge, and a monument at the top of the Gotthard commemorating the event.

Egyptian police kills head of ISIS/Sinai group operative in Cairo. He is suspected of being behind the claim of bringing down the russian plane.

Or so the Egyptian Interior ministry says: Hardly a reliable source (but you''d better not say it Egypt if you want to stay out of jail). The Egyptian army keeps "winning" against terrorists in Sinai since 2012, but Sinai goes from bad to worse.
