"US American" seems to be a uniquely German language thing, at least, I haven't heard it outside DE and CH. English-speakers just don't use that strange term.
Face it, they appropriate the term, they're Americans. At least in English, anyway. That's how it is.

While in Europe actually: <<The style manual of the Neue Zürcher Zeitung (a leading German-language newspaper) dismisses the term U.S.-amerikanisch as both ′unnecessary′ and ′artificial′ and recommends replacing it with amerikanisch.[11] The respective guidelines of the foreign ministries of Austria, Germany and Switzerland all dictate Amerikaner/amerikanisch for official usage>>
So 'cause you never heard it, it doesn't exist and the rest of us is naive. Geee, the world just shrank enormously to the size of yours.
The "an" was a typo. Agreed.
"Face it, they appropriate the term, they're Americans. At least in English, anyway. That's how it is."
ROFL, I couldn't care less. They can have the name "American", for all I care. If it comes to being Peruvian I would never use the term American, or even South-American.
They came up with all kinds of stuff apparently; United Statesian, Unisian, United Stater .....(same source).
I agree, we should stick to American until Trump solves that problem too

What is your source for the first paragraph of your post? Wikipedia?
I also couldn't care less. You're welcome to walk around calling Americans "US-Americans". You'll just sound weird and pedantic and you'll instigate some interesting discussions, I'm sure.
Anyway, "MUSAGA" just doesn't have the same ring to it, does it? ETA:
Seems you've done a bit of selective quoting. From your Wikipedia article (yes, I googled): "Different languages use different terms for citizens of the United States, who are known in English as Americans. All forms of English refer to U.S. citizens as Americans, a term deriving from the Americas." So, since you trust in Wikipedia: case closed.

I said that I hadn't heard the term "US-American" used by anyone other than German speakers. Have you? You're a German speaker, you use the term, you prove my point. So do many other German speakers on this forum.

| | Re: Facebook are prudes | Quote: | | | | | My grandma use dto do that too. She lived in Singapore and other Asian countries, both before and after WW2 and she had three words, Japanese, Chinese and Native. The Japanese were Japanese and she was very particular about keeping them in a special category. The word had a tinge of admiration, even if she didn't approve of what they did. A Chinese was anybody who wasn't directly Japanese but was educated, had a profession or was a trader or otherwise worked for a living. Calling somebody a Chinese even if he didn't fit in any of these categories was also sometimes a sign of admiration or approval. The poor people out in the villages were the natives. You wouldn't deal with a native directly but always got a Chinese as go between. If a native worked hard enough he could become a Chinese.
But that was a different time, when sensitivities to what would today be considered racism were different. Well, it was blatantly racist, but at that time people used such words with some naievety. | | | | | Haha lol. Of course it was blatant racist, attributing or making confusions between ethnicity and social class or economic status. I think some people still view the world in this type of hierarchies. And it's unlikely to be out of naivety, if it ever was the case.

At that time the Chinese did form the bulk of the middle class in places like Singapore, a bit like Indioans or Malays did in some parts of South Africa.
If a particular group frequently has a particular profession, people may attach those words to that profession.
In Hamlet there is a line where the king calls for his "Switzers". my teacher in school told me that doesn't necvessarily mean his guards were Swiss, but at the time there were so many Swiss mercenaries that people might call any mercenary or otherwise foreign soldier a Switzer.

for many Latin Americans, any 'white' person is a 'gringo/gringa'. It doesnt matter if you're from Ohio or Uruguay. You're a gringo.
Any 'black' person is a 'negro/negra'.
Any 'asian' person is a chino/china.
These terms aren't generally used or meant as insults, or deemed offensive.
Peruvian boy: 'Have you been to Japan?
Me: 'No, i haven't. Why?'
Boy pauses, thinks, makes inquisitive face, asks:
"They're chinos, aren't they.?' | This user would like to thank pilatus1 for this useful post: | |

But that was just ignorance, not racism.
