Some are just jealous they ain't American.

And then you wonder why you have so many red blobs.

America is a Continent (two actually) not a country. There are more Americans that are not US of A nationals than are.

Peruvians are Americans, just as the Swiss are Europeans. As are Mexicans, Brazilians, Chileans, Canadians, etc.

So to say Americans are prudes is too encompassing. Some US of A nationals or citizens, perhaps, meet that definitions.

And these days the numbers that may be jealous of those between Canada and Mexico are few and declining.

Sorry to be a pedant but the misuse of the term is a pet peeve.

When was the last time you know of any Canadian or anyone south of the US border calling themselves an American when asked "Where you from?" ?
Yes Americans stole the term, but good luck claiming it back.

Hence, why there is little jealousy these days.

I would say that Peruvians were SOUTH Americans. So, what do you call people from the USA then? United Stations??

This is the problem. We dont have a word for this in English, so we just shorten it to ' I'm American', and everyone knows what that means. In Spanish there is a word for 'unitedstatesian' - , estadounidense.

So when you say 'I-m American' some people get upset because they think you are so ignorant that you don-t recognize others from the New World as also being Americans. Of course, if you say ' Soy Estadounidense', they'll often respond with 'Oh- Americano!'

go figure.

At the same time, nobody except people from the US would ever say 'I-m American' when asked where they are from ( They'd say Canadian, or Mexican, or Peruvian, etc.)

It's just another way for people to try to bash on United Statesians.

I hate when people call me American. I come from the Republic of California, dont lump me together with those hillbilly cowboys. Side note; I really hope (unlikely) that California suceeds from the Union. That will put a damper on military spending. Plus our taxes goes to help all those poor red states, the ones who hate welfare and social programms. Cant wait to see what will happen to those poor faukers. Maybe they might start voting in their own best interest? Doubt it. Cant cure stupid.
