This I understand.
I just sometimes see posts in here that describe Germany as a place where nothing is working and gangs of armed brown men walk down the street threatening everybody and picking German girls to rape, so I need to clarify that what you are describing might be a perception for the ones worse off but is really far from the truth.
Perception is everything. Last time I visited Berlin it was so peaceful and nice, I didn't see anything that terrifies some folks here. But some people have a distorted image about many things...:-)
In fact that city is so cosmopolitan and diverse everybody can feel at home there. I'm not saying every place in Germany is like Berlin but most probably they're still far away from the image they have these days..funny.

Obviously you don't read German history books. Reagan left office in early '89 btw.
I don't think any single person single handedly brought down the wall. Many people played a part, including Lech Walensa, Gorbachow, The Pope, Reagan, Kohl, the Hungarians opening their border to Austria, and many other people beside, as well the time just being ripe and communism collapsing of its own accord.

I was talking to a real estate agent in Hungary just this past weekend.

She told me there are right now tow big categories of foreign buyers buying up houses and pushing up the prices.

The number one group in her personal experience is Brits who think buying a house in Hungary is going to help them escape the consequences of Brexit. The number two group is Germans who are running away from increased crime. many of them actually from Berlin. Several estate agencies have even set up offices in Berlin to make it easier for them. She said that about three years ago she might be selling three of four houses a year to foreigners and now it's that number in a month and she's had to hire an extra member of staff just to deal with the deluge.

Re: Do you believe in Merkel?

Berlin has a higher crime rate than the rest of Germany.
This is a fact, and has been long before the Syrian refugees arrived.
Berlin in fact has taken in proportionally a much lower number of refugees that other German cities.
So I'm not sure what you are trying to say, even if we believe that there is an exodus of Berliners due to high crime rates.

So that lady is selling 3-4 houses each month to foreigners, including Brits, Germans and who knows what other nationalities. Hardly significant.

It's a good investment for some. But I would buy in Berlin if I could! lol Perhaps not in every area but I can name a few...let the Brits move to Hungary, I'd take Berlin...or Manhattan hehe.

This is one agent among several thousand.

And that's just one country. There are also people moving to loads of other countries for similar reasons.

I suppose you didn't talk with all of them to see if they tell you the same story. Sometimes people tell you what they think you want to hear....especially those who want you to buy something from them. If they choose to play the safety card, so be it.

But anyway. It is just normal, I suppose, to see a reverse trend too. Many people from Western Europe move to cheaper countries for various reasons - I would say mostly because it's cheaper - a house, land (you can own a piece of this planet, A PIECE OF THIS PLANET for goodness' sake!!! for so little!!!!! compared to CH for instance!!!), to open or invest in a business etc. etc. Family reasons too, sometimes. It's normal, I see nothing weird here. They too take advantage of the EU you know. Those who know, and who can.

No one is saying this. What people are saying is that the rapes and murders of girls would very rarely happen in cities like Freiburg. Girls used to be able to walk home safely alone at night. This situation has now changed.

Is this a new case of asylum-seekers gang-raping a young German girl? Or was it already in the news? I can't keep up...

You sure you're not confusing that incident with this one?

Sexuelle Übergriffe auf dem Freimarkt

Don't concern yourself though, it's a price worth paying for future economic stability. Marton says so.

Perhaps you should read your own link. That is not what the story says.

Esto claims it as a gang rape. The story explicitly says it was not a gang rape.

Definitely. But that's not the point. The point is Helut Kohl's role in Germany's reunificatioin, in particular as described by German textbooks, where Kohl took the lead and everybody by surprise on November 28, 1989, less than a month after the wall had fallen.
