Another piece from the NZZ. This one on why mavericks have it so tough in Germany.

It's quite odd. Despite its clear FDP-stance the NZZ is much more informative and journalistic (analytical) nowadays than any other major news outlet. Sadly, I find less and less reason to keep reading the Tagesanzeiger, it just keeps morphing into a "left Blick" and for-pay 20 minutes.

Re: Do you believe in Merkel?

In Switzerland, the SVP has managed to avoid the sort of conflicts that usually rip apart right-wing populist parties.

Following the usual pattern, the national board of Germany’s anti-immigration Alternative für Deutschland, narrowly voted last Friday to strip party membership from Andreas Kalbitz, a key networker on the rabidly nationalist fringes of the party’s eastern German branches.
The expulsion of Kalbitz has caused a split through the party’s leadership and set eastern against western delegates.

Re: Do you believe in Merkel?

Angela Merkel's CDU takes major hit in regional elections — early results.
When polling stations closed at 6 p.m., early projections showed the CDU taking 23.6% in Baden-Württemberg, and 26.5% in Rhineland-Palatinate, which if confirmed would be the party's worst ever results in both states.

The CDU dropped four percentage points in Baden-Württemberg and 5.8 points in Rhineland-Palatinate compared to 2016.

From these early results, AfD also looks to be three to four points down.

Merkel's party gaining strength
Quote:
The CDU won 35.9% of the ballots in Saxony-Anhalt on Sunday, improving on its last result and defending its position as the strongest force in the former communist region, according to projections from public broadcaster ARD.
Alternative for Germany, or AfD, was second with 22.7%, losing support from 2016.
CDU up around 6% vs 2016 and AFD down around 2%, interesting times....

Hard to say, basically it is believed the conservative centre started to get frightened of the policies of the extreme right element of the AfD.

AFD there are absolute nutters, still get 22%. CDU benefit from lack of viable alternatives among the normal parties and a solid yet unspectacular Prime Minister.

At one point in time they were a respectable euroskeptic party. They chose to be in the same EU grouping as the UK Conservative Party as opposed to the hard right UKIP group or the even more extreme Front National group. Now they appear to be borderline neo-nazis.

I wonder if the rise of the greens has helped the CDU/CSU. There will be quite a few voters (even those with a concern for the environment) who wouldn't want the greens anywhere near power - and so will return home to the CDU rather than rebelling.

It is difficult to see any other coalition on federal level than CDU/Green come September.

The AFD are a conglomeration of the ultra right (maybe 20% of their vote) and all the people who feel like the losers of the last 30 years' development.

Does that mean at least that red-red-green is no longer possible? I think Germany could do without having SED in government...

Surely going into coalition with the CDU would kill the greens like it has killed the SDP?

(1) Of course it is still possible. Looks unlikely though given the polls. If anything, the Greens would be very dominant. And forget about SED, this shit was over by the time you were born, and by now the Linke in my view is just another protest vote.

(2) Not sure. The CDU don't have many alternative options, they even may struggle getting significantly more votes than the Greens, and the Greens benefit from Zeitgeist comparably only to the CDU in the 50s or early 90s.

Or more like the opposite.

Whoever coalitions with the Greens tends to lose voter share in the long run. Now that they've sucked al they can out of the SPD they are moving on to the CDU.

Their candidate is a total fraud - bit like Merkel's other lovechild - Ursula von der Leyen

Re: Do you believe in Merkel?

Difficult to forecast who will win the vote to replace Merkel, with the center-left Social Democrats (SPD) holding a small but narrowing lead over Merkel's party, the center-right Christian Democratic Union (CDU).

One curious note, many of the immigrants Merkel welcomed in 2015 who qualified for the six years citizenship in special integration circumstances are eligible to vote this year.

Looks like both Social Democrats and Christian Democrats need both the Greens and the Liberals to join a coalition. The Libs and Green will now talk to each other and possibly then choose the winner. Funny.
