I think the whole world is going nuts
From today's Express "NICOLA Sturgeon appears to be defying the will of her OWN people after a survey found more than a THIRD of SNP voters chose BREXIT in the EU referendum." Source
This reporter seems to be from another planet! Imagine, for example, the reaction if they wrote "May is ignoring the will of her people almost half voted Remain" !!

I'm surprised this has not been posted yet, one of my favourite absurd stories related to Brexit: https://www.theguardian.com/politics...after-24-years |

Defying the will of her own people, by doing what the 62% majority voted for. Are we now post-maths as well as post-truth?

Meanwhile the never ending story | Quote: | | | | A fresh set of legal challenges asserting that the UK will remain within the single market and the European Economic Area after Brexit have been lodged at the high court.
A group of four anonymous claimants – who are a mix of overseas, EU, EEA and UK nationals – have joined a judicial review of government plans to leave the EU, alleging that separate parliamentary approval is needed to quit the EEA.
The new claims, in the names of those identified only as W, L, T and B, have been accepted by the high court. | | | | | Source |

At this point in time the print media seem to be more about clicks and page impressions than anything else.
The best one though is where one journalist write an opinion piece and then in the other paper his mate gets to report it as a headline piece!

And the next one:
In this one the number wishing to exit has declined right across the board. But the number that who feel that the EU is going in the wrong direction is still very very high up to 80% in many cases. Even in Ireland the number is about 38%! I guess we need to be careful not to confuse criticism with cynicism.

I can believe that the UK experience of the six months that have elapsed after our referendum would discourage people in other countries from the same uncertainty!

And Spain total surprises me! Both countries have gone through very difficult times with the austerity measures, so in a way it is surprising to see them at the top of the heap. It would have been interesting to see the reaction in Portugal as well, but it was not included.

Perhaps they think they wouldn't have made it without EU money, guarantees and negligible interest rates. Likewise for Ireland, though I think they've been growing (again) for longer.

| | Re: The Brexit referendum thread: potential consequences for GB, EU and the Brits in | Quote: | | | | | | | | | | I've not been able to read the story as a whole as its under their sodding premium section but the torygraph has an article asking why Farage hasn't received an honour this year whereas prominent remainers have. This is quite interesting I think. Remember you have to forget your own allegiance... saying farage shouldn't get anything because he's no better than hitler isn't the point. The honours are people who show huge commitment to achieve something. Given that despite its dodgy legitemacy the majority of the voters voted to leave, does this make him less deserving of an honour than a remain figurehead who lost ? And remember they gave one to Dave' press aid as well. He (or she) is more deserving of a new year honour than the person who has dedicated his working life to getting Britain to leave the eu and this year succeeded ?
I'm not moaning btw, I think he says enough damning things to make him obviously blacklisted, but for what they are meant to stand for, why is he less deserving an say the head of dfid who oversaw a 285 million pound airport out in some island where it's too windy for passenger aircraft to land ?

The problem with honours systems is often, being in the power of the incumbent government to award, can result in something meant to reward those who have achieved something (even to the detriment of that government) ends up rewarding only those who made donations to them.
In the case of Farage, it seems like a personal snub.

A leaked Brussels audit found the party broke spending rules by diverting taxpayer money to its own polling | | | | | Source
They do not usually give political honours to people under investigation over such huge sums |

I suppose they want to avoid repeating such embarrasments?
Also from your link "Michael Spencer, billionaire former Tory treasurerhas now failed to get past the honours scrutiny committee four times." so I assume they have some standards? |

While screening does occur, I don't believe it was a factor in this case. Although that might simply be because I can be non-partisan every now and then.

| | Re: The Brexit referendum thread: potential consequences for GB, EU and the Brits in | Quote: | | | | Sir Ivan Rogers, Britain’s ambassador to the EU, has resigned, the Financial Times is reporting.
Britain’s ambassador to the EU has unexpectedly and abruptly resigned, just a few months before the UK is expected to start formal Brexit negotiations in which he would have played a crucial role.
Sir Ivan Rogers told staff on Tuesday afternoon that he would be step down from his post early, leaving officials in shock over the loss of one of Britain’s most experienced EU negotiators. | | | | | He was due to leave next November so it would have been sensible to ask him to stay on for a year or so until UK has finally left the EU.
Rumours have been swirling around for a while that May and the Brexit team have been ignoring his advice; describing it as negative and pessimistic.
