There has long been Cork - Roscoff and Plymouth - Santander but as far as I can actually see (as opposed to think I remember) never a direct Ireland - Spain route.

| | Re: The Brexit referendum thread: potential consequences for GB, EU and the Brits in | Quote: | | | | | One container ship from Rotterdam to Cork will bring more freight than a months worth of these ferry crossings. | | | | | Maybe but irrelevant. The freight volume to Cork would only need a dedicated container ship once every 1 or 2 months. Completely useless for fresh produce or JIT logistics.
There's a mix of services involved and each has its place. Within Europe there is a big place for trucks on ferries as part of that mix.
What do you think this lot are all waiting for

Because if UKIP and other groups got help from Breitbart and Steve Bannon, and probably Putin and others - and it swayed the tiny majority- then it does matter - a lot.
Otherwise I'd agree.

Otherwise I'd agree. | | | | | The government spent £9 million delivering pro remain leaflets to every single house in the country. Don’t you think that may have swayed a larger majority?

I'd agree that papers like the Mail might have swayed some people, but Breitbart? More people read the Beetle Breeders' Gazette than that obscure website.
Anti-EU sentiment had been bubbling away for decades. I remember it well from as far back as the mid-eighties (Labour's 1983 Manifesto had plenty to say on the subject). So it seems a bit implausible to suggest that Steve Bannon or Breitbart had any real influence on the outcome.

I think it sounds chic to blame all on stuff that's not even really read...why not just say straight out that all brexiters must certainly be alt-right. Also quite fashionable and untrue.

Don’t you think that may have swayed a larger majority? | | | | | Follow the money....whose company printed the remain leaflets and why did they cost so much? Well, I guess I know why. Loz. The same people (probably a clientele company of some party(s)) will keep printing leaflets pro-"insert any cause here". That's a moot point imho. | Quote: | | | | Because if UKIP and other groups got help from Breitbart and Steve Bannon, and probably Putin and others - and it swayed the tiny majority- then it does matter - a lot.
Otherwise I'd agree. | | | | | With all due respect, Breitbart is insignificant and rather hidden (for obvious reasons). It's Daily Mail, The Sun, Express, Independent, Telegraph and the rest of mass opioids. You can't really defeat that (how do I know!) Not always the tabloids, btw.
Anyway, nothing will change in terms of immigration, only the advantages of being an EU member will go away. A bit ironic if you ask me, but vox populi, vox dei....(who's the "people" and who're the gods in this equation, that's a good rhetorical question)

Hi
To mail, express and sun you can add the Bbc who ignores the remainers and pushes the disasterous brexit agendas. It did not even over the large anti brexit marches. There is not long to bring hope and freedom and cancel Brexit.
Have fun
Martin

Martin | | | | | You can't blame the BBC. Once they've covered the wage gap in Suriname, the plight of transsexuals in Ouagadougou and one woman's brave attempts to escape her fundamentalist upbringing in Darkest Ohio there isn't much space left to mention Brexit.

Martin | | | | | It seems to me that there are at least two BBC companies, one supporting remain and the other supporting leave. Both sides complain about it, so perhaps it offers a reasonably balanced view after all....

"Both companies [Port of Cork and Britanny Ferries] expect a 50/50 split between passengers and freight carried.
In a statement, the Port of Cork said "the option for freight carriers to bypass the UK land bridge will be seen as very attractive as Brexit uncertainty continues. We have no doubt that both exporters and importers will make this a viable service." " | Quote: | | | | | I win again. | | | | | Not.

It matters because Mr Bannon has deep ties to data firm Cambridge Analytica, which has come under scrutiny for using the Facebook data of 50m people without permission.
The video was shot on March 29 last year to mark the triggering of Article 50 by prime minister Theresa May and uploaded to YouTube. It was embedded in an article - still available on the site - with the quote in its headline.
Breitbart have said the video was not from an official Breitbart London YouTube channel and was subsequently deleted, among a group of others, by whoever controls that YouTube page.

Not. | | | | | Yeah, I read that bit too, but it's bollocks. The problem is that anyone and everyone will jump on the Brexit bandwagon if it means a bit of publicity. Look at the data - there's container ships arriving from Rotterdam carrying 1000 containers plus 4x weekly. And that's not including the weekly arrivals of ships from Antwerp, Bremerhaven, Wallhamn and Esbjerg which all bypass the UK. I've not even gone into the ships arriving at other Irish ports.
Whilst the peasants of Cantabria may get to enjoy some Irish potatoes, those 91 trucks (which btw that ship will never carry) are a mere piss in the ocean when compared to the amount of freight going through Cork harbour from the EU.

One of the main sticking points of the whole facebook data issue is that any one of your 'friends' could give permission for your data to be accessed. I never, ever click on an app that says I give permission to access my friends list, but any of my friends can, and probably do.

So it wasn't anti-EEC/EC/EU sentiment going back decades that swung the vote. It was some obscure data harvesting company working with a news website nobody reads what did it.
And the Russians. Let's not forget the Russians.
