Re: How Many Languages Do You Speak Fluently

had a chat with the woman who works in my local Coop last week. She and her children can converse very well in German, portuguese, Spanish, Swiss German and english. Not to mention all the russian derivations from our Baltic neighbours.

me, I felt really humbled with my only my German, English and french.

I just wanted to add. All three of my kids are fluent in English and German. One of them is fluent in dialect as well.

Only one of them is good at translating! It almost as if the different languages exist in different personalities within their brains. Certainly the youngest (and most fluent) is the least patient with my bad grammar...
My child is also completely bi-lingual. Tri-lingual if you include Swiss German. She’s also great in Spanish and French. She wońt talk to me in anything but English though. Went wrong there somewhere.

Why wrong...she is still learning from you, wants to practice? Isn't EN your mother tongue? I see it quite loyal and a good habit, kids are systematic learners.

Complete fluency has other markers than just ease of speaking, btw. I am surrounded by tri- and quadrilingual people with different linguistic skills in different domains. It's never really fully equivalent.

It can be and is for many.
My OH grew up with Greek parents, living in a predominently Greek and Portuguese neighbourhood within an English speaking country. The language equivalence was instilled from birth. His 90yr old mother still speaks a fantastic level of English with me and the other English members of the family.

This.

I think a lot of people assess linguistic ability incorrectly. If someone is bi or tri lingual and they falter over a word, they are sometimes judged as not being truly bi or tri lingual otherwise "they would know the correct word in that instant", right?

If you are mono-lingual and falter over a word, it's just assumed that someone had a momentary lapse of concentration / brain fart.

Exactly.
OH and I each have our own little filing cabinets and for very good reason. He had an afternoon of filing all his recent paperwork yesterday. I tried to help, but half of his paperwork, tax forms, contracts, etc, are in Greek.

my daughter grew up four lingual and she seamlessly uses a word from another language in such cases, with no interruption at all.

Amazing! After 3 & half years the vote is still active.
Now if the same could be done for national elections.
World leaders could be forced out of office until everybody has voted.

Kids are more likely to think in abstract ideas, not particular word forms or terms. Kids and musicians.

Mine would act words out if a particular term was difficult to find. Acting a word out was still preferable to her, more loyal to its meaning than to look for an exact word in another language which connotes other stuff. Associations.

If you live and think your life in two (or even more) languages, no you often don't know the correct word at the necessary moment.

I had a Swedish work-mate once and we talked English and German mixed wildly together - which ever language came to mind first, switching several times within single sentences. It became a language of our own as people could not follow us anymore. Not because they didn't speak the languages but they could not switch that quickly. Glorious times .... I really had to concentrate to separate the two languages again after. And still sometimes I really need to search for the German version of an English word on my tongue or vice versa.

I like my friends who speak both languages well the best.

Re: How Many Languages Do You Speak Fluently

My mother tongue is Brazilian Portuguese, so it's easier to learn Spanish and Italian, 'cause they've similar linguistic aspects.

My foreigner language is due to having lived in CH, in Geneva, where I studied French and now I have a C2 by DALF.

My English is enough to studying, writing, reading and traveling. Orally, English's still in an intermediate level, words sound in English sometimes are hard to understand or comprehend!

In this case, in that poll, honestly I voted only one foreigner language fluently.

For my Portuguese, no problem 'cause here I teach Portuguese and Literature in public schools

Re: How Many Languages Do You Speak Fluently

Maybe I am wrong, but I thought true fluency is achieved when one can express emotions or complex thoughts in a language other than their native one. If that is the case, even though I have studied 6 languages, I doubt I am fluent in any of them other than English
