Bye bye Erdogan and you islamist acolytes, we won't miss you. Good job Turkish army, nice to see you still have the balls to throw out the guys who are trying to restart a civil war in your eastern parts and keep ISIS running.
It's not done yet, mate.

Interesting to know what response if any from NATO
So far as I know NATO does not interfere in internal affairs.

Re: What is happening in Turkey tonight?

Could not happen to a nicer man

Seems to be an open situation at the moment with both sides claiming they are in control.

Lots of pictures of tanks on TV

Re: What is happening in Turkey tonight?

This is frequently updated and cited as source by other press:

https://www.theguardian.com/world/li...gunfire-ankara

Both President and Prime Minister are apparently free since they released public statements, but control of the media and the main cities is more or less in the hands of the military.

Re: What is happening in Turkey tonight?

Flightradar24 shows no flights taking off or landing from Istanbul Ataturk

https://www.flightradar24.com/FLLME7/a576644

In a live feed showing the Istanbul bridges, via the Guardian website, that got cut about five minutes ago, I could hear what sounded like fighter jets.

On flightradar nothing shows up. That means they are flying with their transponders off. Usually done when they are in a combat zone. Not good.

Apparently only Turkish flights are allowed to land at Ataturk, foreign planes have been diverted. BAW680 from London changed course after a few hours while already in the Turkish airspace... it landed in Sofia a few minutes ago.

I'm following Stratfor twitter account and it says "Erdogan seeks asylum in Germany, U.S. military source says, @MSNBC reported. "

Re: What is happening in Turkey tonight?

Seems that the reports that Erdogan had tamed the military were rather optimistic!

Depending on what you believe to be true this would be the third (or the sixth) military coup in Turkey in the last half century.

Seems to be tending towards being a successful coup; depends on how large a part of the military are not part of this action and how strongly they will react over the next few days.

Rumours that Erdogan tried to fly back but his plane was refused landing permission in Istanbul; might just be a propaganda statement!

Wonder what they plan to do with the Palace

Re: What is happening in Turkey tonight?

Erdogan is constantly on Turkish TV .... calling people to go on the streets and claiming he will join them there!? He seems confident to survive this, politically and physically it seems.

Now now, Boris isn't capable of organising anything. The word you're looking for is "initiated". He's good at initiating things.

Social media being blocked.

Erdogan himself has done this at times in the past.

you got a point there, since about 20 minutes the pictures of him on the phone as well as those of him talking live are repetitions only.

either the translation is really bad or the guy is just babbling. Something about Turkey not being a country that can be run from Pennsylvania??
