Erdogan is constantly on Turkish TV .... calling people to go on the streets and claiming he will join them there!? He seems confident to survive this, politically and physically it seems.
He has to play this role; he is not the type to give up easily!

you got a point there, since about 20 minutes the pictures of him on the phone as well as those of him talking live are repetitions only.

either the translation is really bad or the guy is just babbling. Something about Turkey not being a country that can be run from Pennsylvania??

Re: What is happening in Turkey tonight?

Well with martial law proclaimed he can claim all he wants... If this goes through it'll be interesting to see if the police get purged by a lot, since Erdogan multiplied their numbers by at least 4 during his reign.

Plus we're just getting pictures from Istanbul and I suppose, Ankara. Wonder what's happening in the rest of this rather large country?

Supposedly he's facetiming out of a bunker...

so TRT is blackscreening, but both IMC & ShowTurk are still on air, the first one showing what may or may not be live images....
Ironic considering how he cracked down on social media; now it is claimed he is using the Facetime video messaging app on his Iphone - hope he has his battery charger with him!

The army spokesman too declared the putsch is to save democracy and human rights... a question of perspective, I guess. (source is a German newsfeed, Frankfurter Allgemeine and Spiegelonline mainly at the moment).

Seeing as Erdogan and acolytes consider democracy thus:

"Democracy is like a train, you get on it, and when you're where you want to be, you get off"

I think it's about keeping the train on the rails and throwing off those with expired tickets.

Meanwhile, if Abe or Obama want to help, they should get Nintendo, Google & Apple to unleash Pokemon Go in Turkey ASAP. Like Now. That'll a) change the mood b) distract massively c) put so many out in the streets that have nothing to do with what's happening it'll make protests meaningless unless weapons.

Well done Turkey! Stray away from the founding principles of Ataturk and this is what you get. Here's to a prosperous future

Erdogan will claim, all Pokemon-hunters are on his side. Although that might draw a true picture I'm not sure I'm in favour of that.

I haven't heard of any of our 1st-row politicians an appeal to bring Erdogan back to power.
The silence is deafening.

Hmmm, right. Ban Ki Moon called for calm (not clear who should stay calm) and the United Nations "follow the happenings attentively".

But to be honest, I'm also still not absolutely sure what to think of this. Part of the military is doing this but where are the people who support them? So far it seems only the pro Erdogan people are in the streets (and male only, I keep searching for woman in the pictures on tv). To keep up some kind of decomcracy, shouldn't the people go out there and win this?
