Re: What is happening in Turkey tonight?

From the same article....

Quote:
Reina is no ordinary place. In the past five years or so, President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has been railing against secular Turks as members of an “old Turkey,” people who are out of touch with the country’s reality and unfairly privileged, who — in his words — “sip their whisky while enjoying the view over the Bosporus.” Indeed, Reina is characteristically frequented by secular “white Turks” — a term coined by the late journalist Ufuk Güldemir — the well-educated upper middle class. Not so long ago, nobody in Turkey really cared if some of the club’s clients drank too much alcohol, got wasted, danced and had some carefree fun. Now not only is the lifestyle of the secular people under threat, but their joy is, too.

While I read it I constantly thought what then came up in the last sentence:

Re: What is happening in Turkey tonight?

I have been abroad 10 years now and never had so many friends asking about moving/living abroa and when we told them that we were thinking about going back in 5-6 years they looked at us like we were crazy.

Re: What is happening in Turkey tonight?

Secular people's lives have always been under threat. While we aren't threatened with death everywhere, being an atheist is political and/or social suicide, and in some parts of the world one is murdered.

And you think that's not a part of the plan? Those people didn't vote for Erdogan anyway. If they leave, his majority will be even greater.

Actually we can still vote while living abroad...ironically, that is thanks to Erdogan as he wanted the super convervative voter in european countries.

Important that the ladies in the family contribute to the decision. If they are OK with wearing suitable clothing and head gear, staying in the home more &&&?

Erdogan and his associates approving violent and brutal action by his supporters is something that can easily run out of control; anyway I suppose the risk of them storming the palace and stringing up their leaders is small!

So long as the economy stays strong

that is still a stretch. Maybe a possibility in the mid term but not today.

But is it? There's usually a reason why the currency is falling - the TRY lost about one third (vs. CHF and USD) since 2014.

That is why he is best friends with Katar now...they are saving his ass with money in flow. the last word on the street is that he is personally promoting the sale of Turkish Airlines to Katar.

I think that even him realises that a massive brain drain is the last thing an already troubled country needs, but he'd love them to come to terms, reeducate them. His methods are somehow similar to those used during Stalinist times. But of course, even back then, not everyone died in prison or got "reeducated", some (many?) succeeded to emigrate. The first target was the same category of people: intellectuals, educated middle-class....then everyone who opposed to the great plan, really.
I think he already created a climate of terror in universities etc, and fewer and fewer people will be willing to speak up. So if they "mind their own business"....

Hypocrisy at its best, isn't it...if only his cheer team would see that...

Six billion euro being spent on building first stage of Istanbul's third airport which is claimed to be the world's largest when completed; completion now delayed from 2017 to 2018. It is being built despite court orders suspending construction due to environmental reasons; there are 2.5 million trees that need to be cut or moved
Let us hope it does not turn into a disaster like Berlin's Brandenburg Airport!

Meanwhile Standard & Poor’s (S&P) has lowered the long-term corporate credit rating on flag carrier Turkish Airlines (THY) to 'BB-' from 'BB' with a negative outlook citing weak performance and security worries.

The downgrade reflects THY's significantly weaker-than-anticipated performance since early 2016 “THY has been operating under a challenging environment facing low levels of traffic to and from Turkey, mainly due to security concerns and weak tourism activity”.

Issues are declining tourism and people rejecting using Istanbul as a hub due to fears of terrorism not helped by the fact that 40% of their flights run late.
