Erdogan insults: Turkey is now following critics in Switzerland

The Swiss Govt. have confirmed "The Turkish authorities have sent us about half a dozen legal aids for insulting the President of the Republic."

Ankara wants Switzerland to interrogate people and collect evidence. According to the Sunday newspaper, there are among other things criminal proceedings due to entries in social networks such as Facebook.

Some countries have laws against anyone saying anything about their rulers, mostly monarchies that include expulsion from their countries or jail time. This wouldn't be the first time this has happened. I think he even threatened John Oliver because of his talking about him.

Germany's law about that is going to be abolished next year.

Re: What is happening in Turkey tonight?

The system he proposes is so harmful, even for his benefit.

If by chance somebody else becomes the president, everything he did in the last 15 years can be turned back in 15 days.

Previously, his party needed only 40% of the votes and that was enough, now he will need 50%. 8he was elected with 52% when most of the left didn't vote and he was against a stupid guy)

Unless, he is planning to abolish all elections after the first presidential election (like Hugo Chavez), this system will not help him.

Greece has decided not to return the military officers who escaped from Turkey by helicopter after the "coup".
The reason given was they would not get a fair trial

What! I'm shocked that Greece would think that of Edrogan's Turkey.

May's visit to Turkey today
Quote:
Theresa May and Turkish president Recep Tayyip Erdoğan have signed a £100m commitment to build new fighter jets.
Quote:
May’s spokeswoman said: “We have expressed strong support for Turkey’s democracy and institutions following the coup
Quote:
May said: “This agreement underlines once again that Britain is a great, global trading nation and that we are open for business."
Translation is; "we will exchange our scruples for gold and the price is actually very low"

Re: What is happening in Turkey tonight?

Opposition Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP) lawmakers from the eastern province of Kars and southern province of Adana were arrested on Jan. 31, becoming the latest members of Turkey’s third-largest party to be incarcerated.

HDP Adana lawmaker Meral Danış Beştaş and Kars lawmaker and the party spokesperson Ayhan Bilgen were arrested as part of a terror probe.

With the latest arrests, the number of HDP lawmakers in jail rose to 12. The party’s co-chairs, Demirtaş and Figen Yüksekdağ, along with 10 lawmakers, are all jailed.

Elsewhere, main opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP) assembly member Sera Kadıgil was detained over “insulting the president.”

A statement was released from the CHP after the detention, saying a “lynch” campaign had been launched against Kadıgil due to her opposition to the presidential system.

I think the real subject of the discussions were the Cyprus talks.

UK seems to get different relations with Turkey after Brexit.

Her opposition on TV was smart, elegant and fact based. She didn't ope to Erdogan but to the proposed system.

On the other hand, her twitter account is rather provocative against religion and so on.

Should it matter? of course not, but this is how Turkey works under Erdogan.

Re: What is happening in Turkey tonight?

Turkey’s purges are hitting its business class.
Once among the country’s most dynamic entrepreneurs, the “Anatolian Tigers” are having their firms confiscated

Armed with emergency powers, the government of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan says it has taken over more than 800 companies worth a combined $10bn since July.
A court in Istanbul recently confiscated the assets of dozens of writers and journalists arrested because of suspected Gulenist sympathies.
Officials say they are fighting the financing of terrorism. Critics call it state-sanctioned plunder.

Good question!

Quote:
The Turkish government has last Monday dismissed more than 4,400 public employees, including hundreds of academics, in a fresh round of purges that have in the past elicited criticism from the country’s western allies.

The dismissals, spanned the education ministry, gendarmerie, security services, as well as the ministries of the interior, economy and foreign affairs. One of those dismissed was İbrahim Kaboğlu, a prominent constitution professor who opposed the recently announced changes to the constitution.

Re: What is happening in Turkey tonight?

Is this really life in Turkey today?
Quote:
On 1 September, the life of Ahmet and Fatma Özer, married teachers from Istanbul, changed dramatically. Accused of being sympathisers of Fethullah Gülen, both were fired.
“I am not sure what we are accused of exactly,” he says.
Neither he nor his wife received an official notice, a justification or a court order. Instead, they learned of their dismissal via the internet. “Our names were published in the official gazette. That was all.”
Ahmet used to be a popular tutor, but parents are no longer willing to have their children taught by a “terrorist”. Others are too scared to employ him, lest they will be seen as sympathisers. No school will hire him.
A little over three months after their dismissal, the Özers’ social security was annulled, resulting in the cancellation of state health insurance for them and their children. There is no money for private coverage.

Believe me when I say his; no it isnt.

I spent the last 3 days in Adana and Iskenderun for business. I was 100km away from Haleppo.

What I have seen was really interesting for me.Nobidy was talking about these arrests or firings or even referandum. The local restaurants we have been to on tuesday to thursday were packed with people eating and drinking( so they were not really conservative). People are happy. Let me correst that people are worn out and roght now rhey dont care or react. How can they react when the police, army and whole system is under erdogans control. Where to go to object really.

Anyways, wgat I have realized is that life goes on in Turkey and we, people abroad, particularly focus on the issues but not necessarily the majority of the people.

But you never know what this silence will bring. Hope dies last!

But this is always the case when a country is having troubles. Me as well as friends of mine have been to places even when Bern said, we shouldn't.

They still are the only places you can't really discuss the political situation they're in at the time (as you said, nobody talked about it. At least in your presence, I suppose).
