Not quite Marton, to quote Clinton's campaign slogan from the 90's ... 'Its the economy, stupid'.
Thats one thing Erdogan has delivered on (jobs, schools, tourism, hospitals, infrastructure etc..) and people will ultimately vote depending on whoever promises them continued jobs and prosperity even if they are an undemocratic tyrant. Romance and high brow principles go out the window when faced with these stark realities.
I was listening to one Turkish voter on the radio who basically said, why should I take a gamble on an unexperienced alternative who could mess everything up and take us back 20 years?
"Erdogan has delivered on (jobs, schools, tourism, hospitals, infrastructure etc..)"
Are you joking?

Erdogan started off very well but in the last few years the economy tanked.
Tourism has collapsed partly due to the multiple terrorist acts arising in turn out of Erdogan's war with the Kurds and partly due to Erdogan's anti west European rants.
Russian tourism collapsed after he shot down the Russian fighter but may be recovering.
Unemployment is over 12%, highest for seven years.
GDP is far lower than the best year of 2013.
The Turkish lira has collapsed, in 2012 1 US $ bought 1.8 lira now you buy 3.8! Which surprisingly has not helped tourism!
The major credit agencies rate Turkish investments as "junk".

Re: What is happening in Turkey tonight?

First point, it sounds like this election has been far from a fair and transparent process.

Second point, if what I'm reading on social media is correct, it looks like vast swathes of Turks across Europe voted Yes.

Like Brexit innit?

"Yes" votes by people who think they will be shielded from the consequences

No no no. This is completely different.

And besides, I very much doubt the majority of uk citizens living in Europe voted for Brexit.

How long do we give it before Erdogan reinstates the death penalty?

Not long.

He instantly mentioned it in his victory speech.

Informally yes.

Official result probably takes a few days but at this point it's certain.

Yes vote prevailed, about 1.5 M difference.

Let's see how democratic this referendum actually was. International observers will release their verdict today.

Yeah, really? Have you read the Brexit threads here?
I haven't seen anyone to loathe EU and everything it stands for as people on English Forum in Switzerland.

In fact, I believe this vote plays well in the hands of anti-EU brigade. "Pfui, we were almost about to let the Turks in...."

The election supervisory board officially admits wrong-doing:
Quote:
*YSK BAŞKANI GÜVEN: MÜHÜR TAŞIMAYAN OY PUSULASI VE ZARFLARI GEÇERLİ SAYILDI
They illegally accepted votes in envelopes without official seal/stamp

Yes, if the elections would have been fair, in an open environment, with all sides having (about) the same chance to speak out.. and not Erdo & his thugs basically dominating the medias like they are already a dictatorship, THEN people might say so.

But if using massive fraud, massive propaganda, and pretty much whatever tool you had to get more "Yes" votes you're just getting 51%, then it's VERY clear to me that a MASSIVE majority said NO to Dictator Erdogan. Their votes just didn't count...

US elections often have that little "smell" on their side - this one stinks like a trashbag that has been left to rot for several weeks in the hot summer sun of Antalya..

Yes I did, have a look at the poll results on the Brexit thread.

Speaking of the EU, here's Drunker's statement. They smell a rat. I don't think they've realised yet that Erdogan has never wanted to be a member of the EU.

Re: What is happening in Turkey tonight?

*Turkey Election Board Head Sadi Guven:
Quote:
*GUVEN: ENVELOPES AND BALLOTS USED IN REFERENDUM VOTE ARE REAL
*GUVEN: SOME BALLOT STATION OFFICIALS FAILED TO STAMP ENVELOPES
*GUVEN: ELECTION BOARD DECISION TAKEN BEFORE VOTES COUNTED
*GUVEN: ELECTION BOARD DECIDED TO ACCEPT VOTES TO HONOUR VOTERS
*GUVEN: ALL AUTHENTIC BALLOTS HAVE BEEN ACCEPTED AS VALID
At least other fraudsters work on their cover/disguise properly.
Here they openly commit vote fraud but do not bother to disquise it.
