Re: What is happening in Turkey tonight?

Now Even Turkish Millionaires Are Fleeing Erdogan's Crackdown.

The number of educated, white-collar workers relocating abroad has quadrupled to almost 10,000 a month, data compiled by the CHP opposition party show.

That includes an estimated 6,000 millionaires just in 2016, a sixfold annual jump, according to Johannesburg, South Africa-based research group New World Wealth.

If Gulenists are released from prison, “my people will punish them” in the streets, the Turkish leader said last week. “They will spit in their faces.”

Turkish opposition politician jailed for 25 years on spying charges.
Enis Berberoğlu is first CHP lawmaker imprisoned since lifting of immunity last year, in move condemned as ‘intimidation’!

Berberoğlu, the first CHP lawmaker to be handed prison time since the lifting of parliamentary immunities last year, was accused of providing an opposition newspaper with video purporting to show Turkey’s intelligence agency trucking weapons into Syria.

I thought Erdogan lifted immunity for MPs in order to jail the Kurds, silly me!

Re: What is happening in Turkey tonight?

Two men have been arrested for their role in a violent altercation outside the Turkish ambassador’s residence during a recent visit to Washington by Turkey’s president, police said Wednesday.

The Metropolitan police department said in a brief statement that Sinan Narin had been arrested in Virginia on an aggravated assault charge. It said Eyup Yildirim had been arrested in New Jersey on charges of assault with significant bodily injury and aggravated assault.

Police are expected to release photos of the other eight possible suspects and appeal to the public for information on their identities, the official said.

Probably these are Erdogan supporters who along with Erdogan's security people assaulted protesters.

The CHP has around 12 million voters so a big group to upset?

Karma, if I remember correctly the CHP voted for the law to take away immunity from MPs?

He may be released (or not) but that won't keep Erdogan from going on. One by one he'll keep taking "forward" steps. And at some point Berberoglu, or his successor, may well be jailed again. Just this time for good.

Drip. Drip. Drip. Drip.

Just on TV news; German parliament voted today to withdraw troops from Turkey's Incirlik Air Base.
Does not seem to have reached the newspapers yet.

Also the German airforce will train with Israelis in Israel.

Have you seen the latest poll made on the religous aplroaches of people in Turkey. It is made by one of the AKP firms and get this...it showed that people are getting further away from religion. Unfortunately I dont have an english version of the study.

Evidently not going to be mentioned until they reach undergraduate level.

http://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-40384471

Of course how you can teach biology to undergraduate level without evolution I don't know. Maybe they'll just give up teaching biology altogether.

EU has to throw any Turkish ideas of joining the EU out the window.

And isn't it interesting that two countries on opposite religious sides (Turkey and Saudi Arabia) both ban evolution.

Re: What is happening in Turkey tonight?

What this does is, it refuses evidence-based logic and reason. Not just for biology but for all its parts, it repudiates the scientific approach itself. With something as fundamental as this there's no way you can cherrypick or pretty-paint.

So Turkey as well as US creationists effectively say what's been reached and gained these past 3-4-5 centuries is based on .... whatever, air perhaps. Or god's whispers, the scientists could just as well have remained in their beds.

What this does to the scientific community is anyone's guess. The only certain thing is, it's not good.

Guess Turkey will keep being the biggest hazelnut exporter for a very long time.

Re: What is happening in Turkey tonight?

Having been educated in the Turkish education system, we were always aware that the our religion and biology science were teaching two contradictory ideas but frankly we never cared. We only cared for what grades we were going to get.

At this age one cannot keep people away from learning. Even if the book will not have evolution, the lecturer will teach or at least show the ways to the kids to learn more on evolution. In the end, you may chose not to teach gravity but it will not stop existing because of that.

What AKP is trying to do today is against the DNA of the public and a big tension is building up in the public. This is more worrying than the evolution teachings.
