Plenty to choose from. Empress Theodora would be a good start. | | | | | She was Greek so it doesn't count.

And even Atatürk, the other way around, wasn't born in nowadays Turkey.

Ali Avci who made a propaganda film about Erdogan's early life has now been arrested; accused of links to whatever his name is
So I guess nobody is safe?
This was before the general release of his film about the "coup"!

Thoughtful article in the ft "A year after the coup attempt, Turkey wrestles with the truth", more questions than answers here (might be behind a pay wall)

Turkey ordered some missiles from Putin?
How long until we kick them out of NATO? |

The army also wanted to buy missile defense systems as well but NATO blocked it. On the other hand they also refused to sell Nato made missile defense systems, so it leaves the country with limited choices.
I often think about what would happen if Turkey left NATO. I think it will be lose lose scenario for both in the mid term. In the long term, it wouldn't be so different.

And if you only "win" a election thanks to massive fraud, then no, you can't even speak in the majority of Turks (especially NOT for those living in Turkey and actually witnessing it "live" and not through the propaganda channels from the AKP, who were and are - despite ALL the fraud involved, against Erdogan)
Obviously Turkey isn't like North Korea, but the direction it took in the last couple years is turning it into quite a shithole. If it ain't one already..
Democracy, free press, free justice, all this (and much more) doesn't exist anymore in Erdogans "new" Turkey.

I find it funny because two bastards punishing each other is only funny for me at this stage.
I am with you on your comments on the elections but dis agree on the north korea approximation. Maybe Libya like but not North Korea. Or maybe chavuschevsku or mussolini but not North Korea.
Anyways, I still think his days are numbered because he is now going to points shich are beyond logic even for his own supporters.

This has been a very interesting thread so far. Could you take your personal attacks to the asylum thread (we're used to it and so are the asylum-seekers) or the Trumph thread (it kind of suits the subject) and let this one keep being one of information and very moderate opinion-expression?
Cheers.

You've not been on this thread since February 3rd, yet you rush in, lash out to people who's posts you obviously didn't read. | | | | | There is a lovely word in German for people who act like you and tell others what to do and what not Anyway.. let me tell you one thing: What's happening in Turkey since a few years, and increasingly since 2016, isn't "funny" at all for the ten thousands of Turks imprisoned for no reason but to be found "suspicious". Or for the hundred thousands of people having lost their jobs directly (teachers, judges, policemen, etc.) - or for the Millions of Kurds and other minorities, etc. etc. - it's sad, but definitely not "funny", what's going on there! If you're commenting from outside of Turkey you're apparently save, but even in Switzerland, the Turkish state aka the AKP is spying on "it's" population. Guess you've read the case about the Basel policeman?
Again, anyone calling this "funny" - and I've read that comment very well, and didn't misunderstood it, simply didn't read up the whole thread which is 45 pages by now (is that a prerequisite to be allowed to express myself?) - in the form saying "it's funny in Turkey" is practically defending what Erdogan and his thugs are doing in Turkey.
It's not a free country anymore. They dropped from "basically European standards" to "Somewhere slightly worse than Russian standards". And that's a huge drop in such a short timeframe.
As you can see, Dark Blue already corrected and explained his comment.
Maybe being less involved with Turkey and/or from the outside will make the ongoings there indeed look "funny", but having been there (physically) a lot, it makes me just one thing: Sad. | Quote: | | | | | This has been a very interesting thread so far. I dont know when was the last time you have visited Turkey. I go there min once a month. In fact I am in Turkey right now. I was in Turkey one week after the coup attemp as well. And I dont only to go Istanbul I travel almost every where. Last month I was at the syrian border. So I think I kniw what is happening in my country.
Yes It is no picknic in Turkey. However, 95% of the people jailed and got fired were guilty. They were guilty of getting jobs which they didnt deserved in the first place. Are they guilty of treason, dont think so. Also,Erdogan and his party are the first ones to be ounished. What is happening in Turkey is as if Hitler were punishing Nazis for fashism.
However, Turkey's story is far from being over. Put what you read in media apart, Turkey is still alive with half and maybe more of its population against Erdogan and his thugs. There is fraud in elections but also he doesnt need a big majority to keep the power. The biggest reason why he is so powerful is lack opposition in Turkey. I am not talking about Kurds but a center or center right alternative.
Keep watching Turkey closely. I have been saying it here. Things change so fast and you will be surprised.

This perspective is realistic because such an integration would not be merely a military-technical issue, but more of a political and security decision.
Now, Turkish decision-makers know that this might enable Moscow to have access to invaluable information about NATO's critical capabilities.
On the other hand, it would be a major handicap for Moscow if Turkey decides to provide its future S-400s and related radars for NATO exercises in the future because it will give the Alliance access to its technology and experience with how it works. | | | | | Source | The following 3 users would like to thank marton for this useful post: | |

The Turkish president, Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, reiterated his support for reinstating the death penalty and threatened to cut off traitors’ heads in a pair of emotive and combative speeches to mark the anniversary of last year’s attempted coup. Source
I assume he will not bother with formal and tedious trials before imposing death sentences; so far none of the jailed alleged coup plotters have faced trial |
