he has the daydreams of being a Sultan, but just like what we did to the last sultan who accepted Sevres, he will have the same destiny if he ever opens that door.

Don't know, I guess it's a symbol of war, destruction, opression. He's holding prayer beads in the the other hand, how pious...
Of course, there's something missing from Putin's equipment..I would have added an eye patch. I thought it was spot on in a funny way.

Speaking of short guy's complex and absolute ruler:

"Napoleon complex" is a complete misnomer. Contrary to common belief Napoleon was anything but short, relatively speaking.

With 5 foot (French foot, mind) and 2.5 inches he measured about 168cm, median height of the French recruits in 1835 (14 years after his death) was 162cm (median), in 1878 Swiss recruits were 163cm tall (average). The equivalent today (6m above average) would be 183/184cm, respectively.

Re: What is happening in Turkey tonight?

A US jury has found a Turkish banker, Mehmet Hakan Atilla, guilty of helping Iran evade US sanctions, after a nearly four-week trial that has strained diplomatic relations between the United States and Turkey.
He was found not guilty on a money-laundering charge.

It's gone quiet, the world lost interest in Turkey? Seems dangerous to me as he can do what he likes when nobody is looking.
Does anybody know what's going on there?

Re: What is happening in Turkey tonight?

Turkish jets bombed the Kurdish-controlled city of Afrin in northern Syria on Saturday, as Turkey promised to expand military operations against a Kurdish group that has been a key ally to the US in its fight against Islamic State in Syria.

Warplanes attacked Afrin shortly before sunset, Turkish media reported. A Kurdish official confirmed the strikes, saying they were the first by the Turkish military on the city, in what it has named operation Olive Branch.

Then they are welcome to stop arming the PKK units there and leave.

This is not only Erdogan, the Turkish has always been against such activities at it its border. Yes, Erdogan is stupid and he made terrible mistakes in Syria but believe me other then the Kurds in Turkey, rest is supporting the intervention against PKK controlled areas such as Afrin and Munbij

Re: What is happening in Turkey tonight?

Moody’s credit agency lowers Turkey rating to Ba2 from Ba1, two levels below investment grade! Cites institutional damage and higher risk of external shock-

Lira is close to lowest ever at $3.82 versus a very weak US$

Inflation and the current account deficit are rising.

The year end deficit is forecast at 4.5 per cent of GDP, extremely high.
Gross reserves at $90bn are far too low.

GDP growth is strong.

Re: What is happening in Turkey tonight?

Hey, we have a populist leader that spends way to much to keep his cronies and disciples happy, while exploiting, disowning and outright killing a minority and threatening and sometimes attacking other countries (going after the same minority there).

He dreams of giving his country the historic size and importance he and his disciples believe it deserves.

We have seen this before...it didn't end too well.
OTOH, the world finally got rid of that populist leader, eventually.

Re: What is happening in Turkey tonight?

Two Turkish journalists have been freed on bail after over a year behind bars in the trial on terror-related charges of staff from the opposition Cumhuriyet newspaper. The case is seen as a test of press freedom under President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan.

Cumhuriyet’s editor-in-chief Murat Sabuncu and investigative reporter Ahmet Şik were ordered to be freed by the judge after a day-long hearing. However they remain under charge and on trial.

Taking aim at the government, Ahmet Şik: “I assure you that day will come when this Mafia sultanate comes to an end.”

Re: What is happening in Turkey tonight?

Big stink in Bern about the alleged attempted kidnapping of a dual Swiss/Turkish national here in Switzerland in 2016 (hope it was nobody in EF ).

Source (German language)

Quite a lack of detail but most political parties seem to support a strong response.
Seems to have come into public view as Swiss federal prosecutors have just announced their formal investigation which started a year ago.

I would disagree with killing a minority part. It seems like you are taking the events on the face value.

Erdogan will do anything to remain in power. In the days he needed the Kurdish support he was the biggest defendant of them.

Here is erdogan when he needed talabani: link

Here is Erdogan when he needed Esad: link

Here is when Erdogan let the Kurdish peshmerga cross Turkey to go to Kobane: link

I couldn't find a picture but he has also welcomed head of PYD Salih Muslim in Ankara.

After all, why he finally has acted on Afrin is because of the last US announcement of 30,000 border protection force which potentially threatened his power. Finally at one point his interests coincided with the ones of the country and he acted right.

Turkish lira hits a record low, 1$ US now buys 4 Lira!

Believed to be because Erdogan is focused on stimulating the economy as he is facing re-election next year and therefore he is ignoring the rising inflation.

on the bright side, my vacation got alot cheaper

This is the governments way of increasing competitiveness and hence the exports as you said in the expense of inflation which they keep manipulating every quarter by changing the baseline, the product basket or the other criteria

Re: What is happening in Turkey tonight?

Erdogan’s ruling AK Party has established an alliance with the Nationalist Movement Party (MHP); a move believed to be because of concerns the MHP would not reach 10% of the vote needed and therefore no seats in Parliament.

In a good example of the law of unexpected consequences a coalition between the CHP, the fledgling Iyi (Good) Party, the Islamist Saadet Party and the Democrat Party is expected to be formally announced at a news conference today!

It will enable the smaller parties in the alliance to skirt a regulation that mandates parties must receive at least 10 percent of the vote to enter parliament.

Meanwhile the lira hits a new low of 4.2 to the $; inflation going through the roof!

Edit: In an unexpected move, Standard & Poor’s cut its sovereign debt rating on Turkey further into junk territory on Tuesday, citing widening concern about the outlook for inflation amid a sell-off in the Turkish lira currency.

S&P said the ratings decision, cutting Turkey to “BB-/B” from “BB/B,” was not part of its regularly scheduled reviews, reflecting what it said were growing concerns.
