Seems like HDP exceeded 10% but what they can achieve with their seats is less than clear
And will they all go to jail after the elections?

Re: What is happening in Turkey tonight?

Given what I've read and heard, I can actually believe he got that many votes.

He still seems to be popular outside the big cities and with poor people who he got into jobs.

Given the current situation in the region, most Western leaders couldn't care less if he had babies for breakfast - if only the status-quo can be maintained and the influx of refugees curbed.

Re: What is happening in Turkey tonight?

Another 18.000 People will be fired due to Connections to terrorist organisations and/or "acts against national safety" among these are about 9.000 police officers, 5.000 soldiers and 199 academics.

That brings the total after the "coup" attempt at 160.000 people being imprisoned, and about the same amount who got fired.

Just another political cleansing imho.

Erdogan names son-in-law to lead treasury and finance ministry

Must be a good time to bet against the Turkish economy (again)!

Erdogan's new cabinet excluded former deputy prime minister Mehmet Simsek who was considered the main market-friendly minister in the previous government.

Erdogan said today he expected interest rates to fall.
Lira promptly fell to 4.85

Rest of the economic indicators look less than good!

Lira at 6 at end of the year. Or worse..

I think Turkey has fallen beyond the point where they still can "fix" the numbers to appear correctly.

Re: What is happening in Turkey tonight?

Following the central bank decision today to leave interest rates unchanged the lira is now hovering around 4.9 to the dollar!

I am sure the newly reelected President will soon fix that, reduce inflation and find a way to service the huge foreign currency debt

$ now buys more than 5 lira, possibly related to the US sanctions in the story of the arrested US pastor.

Istanbul’s main share index, the BIST 100, fell 2 percent on Aug. 2, with banking stocks among the decliners.

And stocks are "down" even when they stay at the same level due to the exchange rate for any Non-Turkish investor basically

I wonder what will happen next on the downward spiral..

Re: What is happening in Turkey tonight?

$ now buys 5.3 lira after lira hitting a low of 5.4; halved its value in 2 years.

Economy in accelerating meltdown (The yield on 10-year bonds surged above 20 percent to an all-time high) and Erdogan seems unable to accept to ordering the required corrective actions.
So, what next? An IMF bailout like in 2000? Will Erdogan accept such humiliation?

Not the end of the year, but today it already twice stood at 6.04 and a bigger fall is only to be expected.

10 yrs interest is a whopping 20%

Banks like BBVA and Unicredit are getting worried due to their large amount of loans set out in Turkey, due to the inflation it is likely that a lot of those loans are not getting paid back. So I guess soon banks need another rescue?

I think the only conclusion is that the collapse of the Turkish Economy has become really unavoidable and has started to fall rapidly in its current political climate.

Re: What is happening in Turkey tonight?

Let's also not forget that the Turkish economy and especially its growth is credit driven, with the current standings and expectations it will be harder to get credit, and if they get it, it will be even more expensive. To me this is just another reason why their economy will fall, and when it does it will fall hard.

Must suck to be a modern Turk in a country where a disastrous president has been chosen due to all of those conservative turks living in modern countries like Germany

I have just authorized a doubling of Tariffs on Steel and Aluminum with respect to Turkey as their currency, the Turkish Lira, slides rapidly downward against our very strong Dollar! Aluminum will now be 20% and Steel 50%. Our relations with Turkey are not good at this time!

Can someone translate that for me? Into English is fine.

In reaction to the new Trump tariff threat the lira is now down to 6.6

Probably will recover soon
