I have just authorized a doubling of Tariffs on Steel and Aluminum with respect to Turkey as their currency, the Turkish Lira, slides rapidly downward against our very strong Dollar! Aluminum will now be 20% and Steel 50%. Our relations with Turkey are not good at this time!>>
Can someone translate that for me? Into English is fine.
Turkey holds an American pastor for political reasons in prison, they say he is one of the hundreds of thousands of people responsible for the coupe (executed by only a few dozens, if it even was a coupe...), America already had announced punishments towards Turkey if they would not release him, Turkey did not release him, so they raised the tariffs on specific products from Turkey in an attempt to economically hurt them so hard that they will release this American.

Must be great if your country would actually back you up like this, mine would negotiate a little and than shake the shoulders and let me rot away in the Turkish cell.

In reaction to the new Trump tariff threat the lira is now down to 6.6

Probably will recover soon
The lira's slide was in place well before the tariff announcement! Trump probably believes that the value of the lira has been suppressed by the Turkish government to make its exports more attractive, so he is countering the attractive pricing with tariffs for export to the US.

But he's wrong. Again.

This extra tariff is announced to be due to the pastor not being released, do you have proof to this not being the case?

Also the Lira took an extra hit right after this announcement.

You want me to prove a negative?

The tariffs were due to Trump getting upset over his Space Force logo competition being pilloried last night by late night TV show hosts, do you have proof to this not being the case?

So you were only expression your thoughts and nothing factual.

Good to be clear on such in a discussion about economics.

Prove your contention. Don't forget to include some facts.

For the record, I simply translated Trump's tweet, as requested by curley. I have no doubt that the vengeful orange baboon* has all sorts of ulterior motives, but I simply explained the one that he tweeted.

*No offence to the EF resident who unfortunately shares the same name.

2. Baboon? I thought we'd be more mature people here instead of relying on such childish behaviour.

3. For the record, I was not referring to your translated tweet.

2. Orangutan would obviously be more accurate, especially with regard to hue, but less evocative.

3. No idea what you're getting at here.

I'm afraid that this is only the beginning. If a newly elected president is the key problem, then there is no way out.

Feeling sorry for all the Turkish people that didn't vote for him.

Oh look -- more "thoughts", this time by a BBC journalist, who links the tariff hikes to nothing more than... the falling value of the Turkish lira. Fancy that.

You can always find whatever corroboration you want, somewhere on the internet.

<<The Turkish Trade Ministry responded that the additional tariffs were against the rules of the World Trade Organization.>>

Probably. There were a lot of similar comments about Trump's first round of tariffs, too. To put it simply, Trump has no clue about economics, international law, or even policy making, and absolutely no inclination to listen to qualified advisors.

Of course they are against the rules of the World Trade Organization; but who and how can enforce these rules?

Nothing like an adventure holiday to give the kids something to talk about back at school!

Yet most likely they will come back and say it was nice, sunny and quiet and the food was great. Like my friends do.
