Re: What is happening in Turkey tonight?

Looks like more Turks headed for prison!

Latest from Erdogan "Erdogan said there is an “economic terror” being waged on social media, adding that “traitors” would be punished."

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has dismissed calls for the country to raise interest rates to try to ease the crisis — and has lashed out at the United States after it announced new trade tariffs on Turkey.

"You are a strategic partner in NATO and on the other hand you stab your ally in the back? Is this acceptable?" he said in a speech Monday.

Strange statement! The US clearly stabbed Turkey in the front, not the back!

The iPhone plan is hilarious.

And it won't help as most people buy them abroad anyway.

Re: What is happening in Turkey tonight?

Lira recovers to 6.11 to the $; possibly as investors and Turkish diaspora see the lira as a cheap buying opportunity.

Meanwhile the Turkish government has doubled its retaliatory tariffs on American cars to 120% and on alcoholic drinks to 140%, according to a notice published Wednesday.
Other affected products include fruit, coal, makeup and rice.

Edit; Iyi opposition party spokesperson Aytun Çıray apologised on Thursday for demanding the seizure of the Turkish franchise of Trump Towers in response to US sanctions on Turkey's Justice and Interior Ministers.

Re: What is happening in Turkey tonight?

All that Qatari money helped little. Close to lowest exchange rate ever already again, and with Erdogan having no clue about how to run an economy, it won't become better (more the opposite..)

Turkey‘s central bank has raised its key interest rate to 24% in a dramatic bid to control rocketing inflation and prevent a currency crisis.

Ignoring calls for restraint from President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, the bank raised its main short-term rate from 17.5% following weeks of pressure from international investors.

Sensible move, even if years too late!

Lira has improved to 6.1 vs $, hard to forecast if this late rate change will be enough to stabilise the Lira!

A clear attempt to bankrupt Turkey by shifting the airplance maintenance and operation costs on their shoulders.

Does anybody wonder what's happening in Turkey while Erdoğan pretends all the action is on the Saudi-embassy-disaster?

Re: What is happening in Turkey tonight?

Turkey’s lira weakened more than two percent against the dollar on Wednesday after the government unexpectedly announced a plan to cut taxes on several sectors, including cars, white goods and furniture, until the end of the year.

The tax cuts, announced by Finance Minister Berat Albayrak, came hours after the central bank sharply raised its inflation forecasts for this year and next, predicting a rate of 23.5 percent by the end of 2018.

Lira now 5.6 vs $

I suppose you didn't ask the journalists and Erdogan's opponents about their health...if you read some interviews with people who actually live there you'd get a totally different picture. Or with those who don't live there anymore, like Orhan Pamuk.

Shouldn't assume. I have friends who are Turks and indeed quite unhappy with the politics much like in many countries yet it changes nothing about how beautiful the country & welcoming the people are

But that wasn't the question. It never was. Not in Turkey's case at least, because most people I know have visited it. Other countries might struggle with lots of misconceptions (lol, I remember someone here who was afraid to visit Armenia or Georgia or one of those), but not Turkey I think.

You can say the same of about any 2nd or 3rd world country. FCBarca just went on a holiday. Should he interview the full local population?

Not really. Not everywhere journalists are imprisoned for instance. I understand your patriotism, but so do these people who talk about all these things feel. They too love their country you know. They don't criticise because they hate it.

Btw, do you want to see where Turkey stands when it comes to freedom of press index?

Amuse yourself and check out the rest

Re: What is happening in Turkey tonight?

Phantom voters found - now there's a surprise.

"Political parties in Turkey are crying foul after thousands of unlikely voters appeared on the electoral roll.

Among the oddities are many first-time voters over 100 years old - and one aged 165.

Opposition parties also said they had discovered more than 1,000 voters registered at a single apartment.

The discovery comes ahead of local elections in March, in which President Erdogan's AK Party may face its toughest political challenge in years.

Turkey has faced economic stagnation in recent months, and the value of its currency is significantly lower than it was a year ago. That has led to speculation that the dominant AKP could lose several key cities, including the capital, Ankara.

Opposition parties now say that voter lists are being manipulated."
