Re: What is happening in Turkey tonight?

Turkey’s government will sell cheaper vegetables and fruits online besides their sales at physical points-of-sale set up in a number of districts by municipalities in the capital Ankara and Istanbul as part of efforts to fight against excessive price hikes which President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan recently described as “food terrorism.”

Source

Selling stuff below wholesale prices does not sound like a long term plan! Also the local retail businesses will be very unhappy, maybe they will start buying their stocks online!

I wonder if voters will fall for this trick and vote for Erdoğan and his party in the local elections next month?

With inflation around 20% and lira around 5.3 to the US$ so prices will not improve any time soon.

Taking a page from the Chavez-and-Maduro book?

What could possibly go wrong?

While Turkey does not have oil, it has a number of get-out-of-jail cards that include its NATO membership and its geostratetic position at the border of the Middle-East (and the new Russian Empire).

Erdogan has managed to play (and please) any side at a given time more than anyone else in the past.

Someone will bail them out, it's a good bet.

Rerun of the disputed Istanbul election tomorrow; polls show opposition 8 or 9% in the lead, of course pollsters do not get to count the votes!

Early results show Imamoglu 8% ahead with a slightly higher voter turnout; will Erdogan be able to block this

Binali Yildirim already declared to be defeated and this difference with this amount of votes counted is simply to big to overturn anymore.

Erdogan started it all in Istanbul, lets see if his downfall also starts there.

That's going to be hard to make disappear. The gap was a modest 0.2% first time round, wasn't it? A real poke in the eye for Erdogan.

Cancelling the March election has turned out to be a failed gamble for Erdogan.
He could instead have claimed his tiny loss in March was an exception and everything will be OK, but now this 9% loss today is a disaster for him and the AKP!

Istanbul and Ankara (which the AKP also lost) represent around a quarter of the Turkish population so very significant. Kurds represent up to 20% of the population and they mostly live in Turkish Kurdistan so another big block of votes.

The first shipment of the Russian-made S-400 air defense missile system equipment has arrived in Ankara, according to the Turkish Defense Ministry.

Likely will generate more useless rhetoric from Trump?

I enjoy bashing Trump as much as anybody, but I doubt that the heads of NATO are very happy with this choice either.

Isn't this against NATO principles though? It's obvious that Turkey has played a double game for quite some years now, see the refugee crisis which fed the anti-EU sentiments for instance.
But no one wants to step on their toes because they have some cards on the table. I doubt that the "rhetoric" from the Americans will be very harsh....there will be the same hypocrit... ahem diplomatic approach, because the West doesn't need a conflict with Turkey.

Edit> on the contrary, they'll be more respected! When you take off your pants and show your but "nah nah nah I don't give a shite on your principles" you get respected. When you're humble and respect the treaties you get a spit in your face with every single occasion. Ha! Long live the partnerships!
