Ex-RNC chairman mocks GOP efforts to stem whistleblower fallout

Former Republican National Committee (RNC) Chairman Michael Steele on Monday mocked the GOP's response to a whistleblower complaint that contributed to the launch of a formal impeachment inquiry into President Trump.

"On this particular day, the GOP decided on a new strategy to address the #WhistleblowerComplaint," Steele tweeted, with a gif of a woman trying to sweep away ocean waves.

As soon as senior GOP people move from a position where they depend on votes from Trump's base they start to look at Trump more coldly!

One in the eye for us armchair strategists
Quote:
Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said Monday that he would “have no choice” but to take up impeachment proceedings if a majority of the House of Representatives approves articles of impeachment.

McConnell also said previously in an interview in March that the Senate would have “no choice” but to hold a trial if the House voted to impeach Trump.

"I would have no choice but to take it up, based on a Senate rule on impeachment."

He'd have to take it up but that doesn't mean he'd need to do anything. They can kill the whole thing without doing anything. Open the trial, declare it closed, job done.

And a major public relations crisis on their hands if they do that. Nothing screams "GUILTY" like an obvious cover-up.

The Office of the US Intelligence Community Inspector General issued a four-page news release today in which it made clear that the whistleblower complaint focused on Trump's July 25 call with the Ukrainian president was processed under procedures put in place in May 2018.

So no rule change!

He does not get to do anything! The proceedings are under supervision of the Chief Justice of The Supreme Court , the senate acts as jury.

any member can move the charges are dismissed early on, that results in a senate vote. McConnel is well aware of that, after saying he had no choice but to enter a trial he added 'but how long we are in it is a different matter'

GOP hold 53 of the 100 Senate seats so it just needs three to vote against the motion to block it; in this case, VP Pence cannot break the tie.

In the surest sign yet that the trade war is hurting the American economy, manufacturing activity contracted for the second month in a row in September, falling to a level not seen in 10 years.

The Institute of Supply Management's closely-watched manufacturing index dropped to 47.8 in September, its lowest level since June 2009 and worse than what economists had expected.

In reaction, US stock markets are crashing down; still plenty of time before the market close for them to recover.

Meanwhile, Trump continues to utilize Twitter and Facebook to push his attacks on the whistleblower

For those who still think Trump is doing a great job for the economy!
The Dow closed yesterday at 26,573.
On 26 January 2018 it closed at 26,616.
Today the US futures market is forecasting 26, 300.

All due to Trump's trade war probably causing a manufacturing recession.

Re: Will Trump be a Good President?

I thought donnies focus on the origins (oranges) of the Russia investigation was an act of score settling, but I'm reading now that its part of a conspiracy therory the moron believes.

As I'm understanding this, the theory goes that the deep state framed Russia for the hack on the DNC servers in order to discredit donnies glorious loss of the popular vote. Further, there is a legendary server that proves Russias innocence and "The server, they say Ukraine has it." Wonder If he's thought about asking the boss to help, surely Putin could find this server.

This is the US president.

Looking at recent TV rounds, one gets the impression Trump is the sane one and Giuliani has lost the plot.

Re: Will Trump be a Good President?

Life stranger than fiction!
Quote:
Secretary of State Mike Pompeo pushed back on Democrats' demands to interview State Department officials and provide documents as part of the impeachment investigation related to Ukraine.

Then State inspector general Steve Linick on Tuesday asked for an urgent meeting with congressional staff from eight House and Senate committees to discuss and provide documents from State's acting legal adviser related to Ukraine.

The meeting is now underway.
Source

I wonder if we will get to hear what he said and what he provided?

Linick has already been investigating allegations of "improper personnel practices in the office of the Secretary," though he has yet to release the findings -- the second of two inquiries into retaliation at the Department.
Basically about members of the Trump administration trying to politicize the work of the State Department and retaliating against people who do not go along.
The inquiry was believed to have been completed in August but nothing has been released.

Seems the meeting was a waste of time

Quote:
Democrats say the State Department watchdog used a closed-door briefing on Wednesday to give them "conspiracy theories" tied to Ukraine, former ambassador Marie Yovanovitch and former Vice President Biden.

"It's essentially a packet of propaganda, and disinformation and spreading conspiracy theories. Those conspiracy theories have been widely debunked and discredited" Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-Md.).

"They appear to contain long-debunked theories and false statements about the former U.S. Ambassador to Ukraine and one of President Trump’s political opponents," said Sen. Bob Menendez (D-N.J.)

"This was just another attempt by the White House to peddle Rudy Giuliana conspiracy theories"
