VP Mike Pence does have a track record in public health - specifically in enabling an HIV outbreak while governor of Indiana and questioning whether smoking is linked to cancer. Source | Quote: | | | | Pence is not a public health expert, either. Instead, as governor of Indiana, he slashed public health spending and delayed the introduction of needle exchanges, which led to the state’s worst outbreak of HIV. He takes over from Health and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar who has been heading the White House coronavirus task force since the beginning of January.
Yale epidemiologist Gregg Gonsalves, who conducted the research linking the Indiana HIV outbreak to Pence’s policies, tweeted that the decision “speaks to a lack of seriousness by the White House.”
Pence also has a history of downplaying the link between smoking and lung cancer, writing in a 2000 op-ed that “despite the hysteria from the political class and the media, smoking doesn’t kill.” | | | | |

I really hope the US and other countries can put together a decent response, it won't be easy. But it's without question that Trump's policies over the last 3 years have made the US less prepared to respond to this epidemic. They include the following ( source)
> Trump slashed the CDC budget. In 2018, the CDC cut 80% of its efforts to prevent global disease outbreaks because it was running out of money. Ultimately, the department went from working in 49 countries to just 10.
> Shutting down the entire global-health-security unit of the National Security Council.
> Eliminating the US government's $30 million Complex Crises Fund.
> Reducing national health spending by $15 billion.

People are still resisting Trump Admin blandishments to "buy on the dip"!
Today saw the biggest ever daily fall on the Dow; now under 26,000 at 25,766, the drop was 1,190 points today. Hard to believe it was over 29,000 just a week ago.
Dow closed down -4.4% today for its 6th straight daily loss and its 9th negative day in 10.
-WTD: Dow is down 11.13% on pace for its worst week since Oct 10, 2008 when the Dow lost -18.15%
-YTD: Dow is down -9.71% YTD
-Dow is 12.86% below its intraday all-time high of 29,568.57 from Feb 12th closing; in correction levels.
Trump is pinning his reelection hopes on a strong economy; those hopes ares looking sick today. Of course, it is a long time until November.

The Do Nothing Democrats were busy wasting time on the Immigration Hoax, & anything else they could do to make the Republican Party look bad, while I was busy calling early BORDER & FLIGHT closings, putting us way ahead in our battle with Coronavirus.
Dems called it VERY wrong!

What flight closings? Trump has not closed any flights?

US courts trying to return to normality. | Quote: | | | | A California appeals court has rejected two of the Trump administration’s efforts to curtail asylum.
The Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals sided with a coalition of immigrant legal services groups in ruling against a Trump administration rule barring asylum claims from people who cross the US-Mexico border without presenting themselves at an official port of entry.
In a separate ruling, the appeals court backed a lower court’s preliminary injunction against the administration’s Migrant Protection Protocol requiring asylum-seekers to remain in Mexico while their cases are adjudicated. | | | | | Source

A federal appeals court ruled on Friday that the House cannot sue to enforce a subpoena of former White House counsel Don McGahn, delivering a win for President Trump.
The ruling would essentially render congressional subpoenas of the executive branch unenforceable.

| | Re: Will Trump be a Good President? Doha, Qatar - US officials and Taliban representatives have signed a final peace deal after months of negotiations in Qatar's capital to end the United States's longest war, fought in Afghanistan since 2001.
Saturday's agreement, signed in Doha in the presence of leaders from Pakistan, Qatar, Turkey India, Indonesia, Uzbekistan and Tajikistan, will pave the way for the United States to gradually withdraw its troops. Also reported here.
Trump seems to be trying to deliver his pledge to 'bring the troops home'.
Pick the bones out of that.

Pick the bones out of that. | | | | | Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.), one of the president’s closest voices on foreign policy, said that “time will tell” if Saturday’s deal between the U.S. and the Taliban holds firm.

This is a massive vote winner for Trump. | | | | | A small step in the right direction | Quote: | | | | The agreement incrementally reduced the number of United States troops in Afghanistan from 12,000 now to 8,600 in 135 days. The remaining troops will continue to fight terrorist groups such as ISIS and al Qaeda. | | | | | So around a quarter of the troops coming home.
The Deal is not yet approved by Congress

This is a massive vote winner for Trump. | | | | | A little bit of confusion around the details.
The government of Afghanistan has made no commitment to free 5,000 Taliban prisoners as stated in a pact signed between the United States and Taliban Islamic militants, President Ashraf Ghani said on Sunday.
Up to 5,000 jailed Taliban will be released in exchange for up to 1,000 Afghan government captives by March 10, the pact stated.
